Las Vegas has been submerged under water in another horrendous batch of flash floods just weeks after the desert city was washed out. Throughout the summer the ‘city of sin’ has resembled the underwater city of Atlantis as unseasonably high levels of rain have seen casinos and hotels flooded. Water damage has been reported along much of the city’s entire strip following intense rain yesterday (August 11). Bay Area favorites Humphry Slocombe and Señor Sisig collaborate on unique ice cream flavor

August 11, 2022 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

Two popular Bay Area businesses, and soon-to-be neighbors inside the Ferry Building, have collaborated on a new ice cream flavor inspired by two classic desserts. Humphry Slocombe shared an Instagram post on Thursday showcasing its latest ice cream flavor in collaboration with Señor Sisig. It’s called “churron,” which is a mashup between the words (and flavors) of a churro and turon, a popular Filipino fried dessert typically made with banana, jackfruit, brown sugar, and lumpia wrappers. “With our soon-to-be Señor Sisig location at the Ferry Building, this sweet collab couldn't have come at a better time,” Evan Kidera told SFGATE in a statement. Kidera added that Humphry Slocombe reached out to Señor Sisig ahead of its Ferry Building grand opening sometime this summer with a pitch to craft a flavor together. Kidera shared that for the collaboration he wanted to focus on Mexican and Filipino flavors (much like Señor Sisig’s existing menu) and that the team decided on … [Read more...] about Bay Area favorites Humphry Slocombe and Señor Sisig collaborate on unique ice cream flavor

Rocky’s Market at Brooklyn Basin in Oakland to close after two short years

August 11, 2022 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

When Corinne Kinczel opened a second location to her Oakland grocery store Rocky’s Market in Brooklyn Basin, she envisioned a gathering space where the community could enjoy fresh, local produce and, eventually, live performances by the waterfront. But after two short years in business, the market is preparing to shutter at the end of the month. Rocky’s Market Brooklyn Basin, including its indoor restaurant The Kitchen, is scheduled to permanently close Aug. 31 due to less foot traffic, Kinczel told SFGATE. The East Bay Times first reported the upcoming closure. “There aren't very many people doing business down here and that was one of the problems for us,” Kinczel told SFGATE. “It didn't pan out how we envisioned.” The closure of Rocky’s Market Brooklyn Basin will not affect the original grocery store location at 1440 Leimert Blvd. in Oakland, which will remain open. Kinczel, who co-owns Rocky’s Market with her husband Brady Bellis, purchased that market in 2016. … [Read more...] about Rocky’s Market at Brooklyn Basin in Oakland to close after two short years

DC has an excess of history and an excess of hotels. For better or worse (usually worse), basically all of DC’s many, many, many hotels have a weird historical quirk. Seriously: There are a lot of hotels in DC, and all of them built before 1990 have a ton of history. If you want to sleep where Lincoln pondered whether or not this experiment was/is worth the effort, just go to the Willard and feel like the best POTUS possible. End of list. But the slightly less Lincoln-centric hotels of DC will provide a much more interesting history lesson. Here are five DC hotels with a history interesting enough for at least a one-night stay. August 11, 2022 by usa.inquirer.net Leave a Comment

Many believe that San Marzano tomatoes are the best-canned tomatoes in the world. They even refer to San Marzanos as the crème de la crème – the standard we use to judge other tomatoes. Back then, it was not easy to lay your hands on them; these days, you can find some varieties on most supermarket shelves. Both chefs, home cooks, and culinary enthusiasts around the world know these Italian tomatoes for their sweet taste and subtle acidity that matches perfectly with cheese and rich meats. But is the San Marzano tomato worth the hype? What are San Marzano Tomatoes? The name “San Marzano” refers to a particular kind of tomato in a specific area in Italy. San Marzano tomato is a plum tomato that is thinner and longer, with fewer seeds than the regular plum tomatoes you might find in grocery stores. Initially, these tomato plants were grown near Mount Vesuvius, in Italy’s Agro Sarnese Nocerino of the Sarno River valley. It is often said that tomatoes grown in rich … [Read more...] about Everything You Need to Know About San Marzano Tomatoes
