Newsletter: Vegas Escapes: You can chill in Vegas

· July 26, 2018 ·

Welcome to the new look of the still-new Vegas Escapes newsletter. I’m Catharine Hamm, the travel editor for the Los Angeles Times, and in the interest of full disclosure, I love Las Vegas.Even when it’s hot. Maybe especially when it is.We SoCal folks know hot, right? Of course we do, and we don’t much like it. So I say to escape the heat, go to Vegas.Sure, it’s expected to be 15 degrees warmer there this weekend, but air conditioning is a way of life for this Mojave Desert city. Heat’s just not an issue as long as you enjoy the great indoors. And it is great. No wonder Elvis is said to have uttered, “Man, I really like Las Vegas.” We have some stories this week that will show you why 42 million people a year, more than a quarter of them from Southern California, like it too. Especially on Sundays. Even though National Tequila Day has passed. And often when Sasquatch is involved.—Catharine HammTEQUILA!Think of caramel, chocolate, citrus, … [Read more...] about Newsletter: Vegas Escapes: You can chill in Vegas

Undefeated Bruins a winner in Vegas

· October 7, 2019 ·

LAS VEGAS — Spotting the Golden Knights a pair of goals, the Bruins steamrolled back on The Strip with four straight goals to remain perfect on the season. In a 4-3 win at T-Mobile Arena, Boston’s top line broke out for three goals and some of their trademark “Did you see that?” puck movement, seen so often in last year’s run to the Cup Final. Brad Marchand (two goals, assist) and David Pastrnak (goal, two assists) seemed to have shed their so-so start in the victory. The Bruins (3-0-0) outshot Vegas, 35-34, with several glittering chances. Vegas, which opened the year by pounding the rival Sharks in a home-and-home (aggregate score: 9-1), came out firing Tuesday. They scored twice in the opening 8:20, putting the visitors down for the first time this season. Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy was trying to coax offense out of his charges. The temporary loss of Matt Grzelcyk, who blocked a shot on his first shift, had the Bruins playing with five … [Read more...] about Undefeated Bruins a winner in Vegas

Lapping up Luxury in India

· October 13, 2019 ·

We flew into Delhi on the last day of June with our son, his wife and their three children.  For me a most wonderful opportunity to show them all India, the India that I know and love. The timing is not what I would choose ordinarily but, considering the children’s long holiday starts end of June, and such a visit requires three weeks to enjoy a comprehensive experience of India as an introduction, we had to go then and brave the heat and the monsoon.  It worked out well. Normally we prefer the months of November to end of March. We stayed for three nights at The Imperial Hotel New Delhi; this fine heritage five-star luxury hotel has been in my conscious for sixty years and is a most wonderful welcome to the capital of India.  The three generations of family were warmly welcomed into gracious suites and the pool enticed the children immediately – well like walking into a lukewarm bath but so welcome! The cuisines are glorious and varied and we were given a … [Read more...] about Lapping up Luxury in India
