Taliban warn women can’t take entry exams at universities

January 28, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Taliban on Saturday doubled down on their ban on women's education, reinforcing in a message to private universities that Afghan women are barred from taking university entry exams, according to a spokesman. The note comes despite weeks of condemnation and lobbying by the international community for a reversal on measures restricting women's freedoms, including two back-to-back visits this month by several senior U.N. officials. Carol Vorderman took savage swipe at her ex-pal Michelle Mone as she said the Scottish underwear tycoon 'should be jailed' over PPE scandal. The broadcaster, who has not been seen with her former friend since 2012, tweeted Michelle should be 'slammed in jail where she belongs'. During an appearance on Friday's This Morning , Carol didn't hold back as she laid into her former close pal Conservative peer Michelle Mone alleging she made millions out of a government contract — a claim she denies. The once pally pair previously enjoyed luxury nights out together but the friendship hit the rocks amid Michelle's alleged involvement in awarding of government PPE contracts. Carol told presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary: "I cannot talk about useless PPE without also talking about Michelle Mone who was brought into the House of Lords, as a baroness, by David Cameron . "We know she has taken leave of absence without losing the Tory whip to start with because she was … [Read more...] about Carol Vorderman tweets ex pal Michelle Mone ‘should be jailed’ after PPE scandal

(AP) — The nation and the city of Memphis struggled to come to grips Saturday with video showing police pummeling Tyre Nichols — footage that left many unanswered questions about the traffic stop involving the Black motorist and about other law enforcement officers who stood by as he lay motionless on the pavement. As the energy crisis sparked by Russia’s war in Ukraine sent shortage fears soaring, the EU raced to shore up gas from alternative producers. It has been scrambling to ease price shocks and slash dependence on the Kremlin as, before Russia invaded Ukraine in mid-February, Russian gas accounted for 40 percent of the bloc’s total supplies.
