When real estate developer (and former Starwood Hotels & Resorts executive) Paul McGowan was touring colleges with his daughter, he couldn’t find decent accommodations near the schools they visited. So he launched Study Hotels in 2008, with the Study at Yale. A modernist tower in Philadelphia followed, and the Study at University of Chicago is due in 2021. With Study Hotels, McGowan took aim at college-town visitors who long for something chicer. Others took notice. Graduate Hotels debuted in 2014 in a renovated foundry near the University of Georgia’s campus in Athens; now there are 19 Graduates, including Minneapolis, each waving a collegiate pennant in its design. Each offers a kind of cool kitsch. GrabBike drivers brake early, fearing for their lives
Others are learning self-defense skills following the murder of several colleagues. It’s only 8 p.m., but 42-year-old Nguyen Hung Thuan, who has been a GrabBike driver for around two years, has stopped receiving bookings from customers, choosing to merely sit and surf the internet at a corner of Nguyen Cong Tru and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Streets in District 1. Normally, early morning and night-time are the peak hours for GrabBike drivers to earn extra money because of higher demand. "I used to pick up passengers until 11 p.m. and return home close to midnight, but now I don’t dare to. I am afraid of being robbed and killed," said Thuan, who rents a room in District 8 with his wife and two children. "After 8 p.m. I turn off my ride-hailing app and take a rest. " Le Hung Minh, 32, who … [Read more...] about GrabBike drivers brake early, fearing for their lives

A report saying Vietnam tops a list of countries by dollar value in illicit inflows is ‘inaccurate’, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Thursday. Le Thi Thu Hang was responding to a request for comments on a January report by Washington DC-based think tank Global Financial Integrity, which said Vietnam tops the list of countries ranked by dollar value of illicit inflows in the 2006-2015 period at $22.5 billion. For the last several years, Vietnam has implemented many methods to build and complete legal frameworks, to apply international standards and abide by international recommendations and commitments to stop money laundering, Hang said at a press meeting. The Vietnamese government is clearly aware of the negative impacts of this phenomenon on the society and economy, she added. The country has the requisite legal … [Read more...] about Vietnam rejects money laundering report as ‘inaccurate’

HCMC is set to announce policies for the conservation of old villas to safeguard its architectural heritage and stop unauthorized demolitions. The People’s Committee instructed the Department of Construction Management to keep an eye on the city’s nearly 900 villas built before reunification in 1975, and ensure they are not demolished or altered. The Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies has categorized 65 villas into two categories for conservation. The first tier consists of 16 buildings with defining architectural values, which are to be preserved exactly as their original forms. One of the most prominent villas in this category is at 110-112 Vo Van Tan Street. The century-old French-style building was sold to a private date company at $35 million in 2015. The beauty and architectural … [Read more...] about HCMC seeks to conserve pre-1975 villas
