Thousands of people prepared to descend on Paris on Sunday (Oct 6) to protest a government plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013. IVF treatment is currently only available to heterosexual couples in France. (Photo: AFP/Josep Lago) Organisers say they are hoping 100,000 will turn out against a law heading to the Senate this month, after it was approved by the lower house of parliament in September. President Emmanuel Macron pledged during his 2017 election campaign to push the law despite deep resistance among right-wing opponents as well as conservative Roman Catholics and other religious groups. They had mobilised massively in 2012 and 2013 against a move by Macron's Socialist predecessor Francois Hollande to legalise marriage for homosexual couples, with one Paris protest attracting 340,000 people according to police. But that law did not allow lesbian … [Read more...] about French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

Top Amazon experiences for the adventure traveller
By Matt Gannan on Oct 08, 2019 in Adventure Travel, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Leisure Travel, Peru, Regions, South America, Speciality Travel, Venezuela The mighty Amazon. The largest river in the world by volume of water and the second largest in length. The dense and impenetrable tropical rainforest it runs through is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. It’s the lungs of our planet, the land of the lost city of El Dorado, a place where myth and reality intertwine. The Amazon means many things to us but above all is home to about 30 million people, 40,000 plant and 2000 animal species, with new species still being discovered. It’s no surprise the Amazon has been named one of the new seven natural wonders of the world, although in reality its mysterious depths have been attracting curious and intrepid explorers for centuries. With Amazon experiences on offer in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana … [Read more...] about Top Amazon experiences for the adventure traveller
The Middle Ages: A homecoming 45 years in the making
If you can’t go home again, why do they hold homecomings? In my suburban hometown, the prairie is just starting to pop — a maple here, a birch there. Damn these wide lush lawns, soft as quilts. You know you’ll always be a Midwestern guy when you still have grass envy.In a couple of weeks, “the caps are off the paints,” as Illinois poet June Luvisi once wrote. Till then, the sky puts on a fine fall show: big clouds, puffy clouds. You could sprinkle some flour and bake these clouds. Might be the initial feathered edges of the Milky Way.Always been a sucker for stuff that glows: sunsets, fire pits, rising moons. Pumpkins on the porch. Children’s cheeks after autumn recess. And now homecomings. Our most American month, October is.And I’m spending some of it here, amid what my wife used to call “the square-faced Midwesterners,” wearing flannel shirts and big welcome-back grins. As you know, I am a collector of inconsequential moments. I … [Read more...] about The Middle Ages: A homecoming 45 years in the making
California bans hotels from offering tiny plastic bottles
Hotels in the nation’s most populous state will have to stop giving guests small plastic shampoo bottles under a new law set to take effect starting in 2023.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday he had signed a law banning hotels from giving guests plastic bottles filled with shampoo, conditioner or soap. It takes effect in 2023 for hotels with more than 50 rooms and in 2024 for hotels with less than 50 rooms.Violators could be fined $500 for a first offense and $2,000 for subsequent violations. The law follows similar actions by some of the world’s largest hotel chains. Marriott International has said it plans to stop using small plastic bottles in its hotel rooms by December 2020. IHG, which owns Holiday Inn, Kimpton and other brands, said it will eliminate about 200 million small bottles by 2021. Marriott officials have said they expected to save an average of 250 pounds of plastic a year — that’s 23,000 plastic bottles — for each 140-room hotel that … [Read more...] about California bans hotels from offering tiny plastic bottles
