Q: Hi, Ira. Can’t the Heat and Panthers do a better job planning their home-game schedules together? They both had great seasons last year and deserve to start their seasons without competing with one another. They each deserve their night in the limelight on opening night. Twenty-five percent of their home games overlap, (10 games). I have season tickets to both. I will have to sell my tickets to the Heat on those ten nights because Heat tickets sell better than Panther tickets do online. The Panthers came out with their schedule five weeks before the Heat, so I blame the Heat and the NBA for this more than the NHL and the Panthers. Just like the overlap of games during the playoffs last year, it’s not helping to grow the fan base for the Panthers. – David, Fort Lauderdale. A: Which I’m not sure should be the Heat’s concern. And I do believe the teams have divergent season-ticket bases. The primary factor is that both leagues have greater flexibility when NHL and NBA teams don’t … [Read more...] about ASK IRA: Should Heat, Panthers have worked to reduce schedule conflicts?

Justin Fields’ connection with Cole Kmet highlights a short night for the Chicago Bears first-team offense
Two thousand miles was a long way to travel for one series of football that lasted 10 plays and less than six minutes. But Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields at least had a few positives to review during the trip back from Seattle on Thursday night. Bears coach Matt Eberflus limited many of his offensive starters to just the first drive of the Bears’ 27-11 preseason victory over the Seahawks at Lumen Field. He didn’t want to put too much on them given they played their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs just six days earlier. But that caution meant a limited sample size for Fields, whose every step is being scrutinized for signs of progress in his second season. So here’s what Fields can take away from his drive — a better start, points on the board, a connection with tight end Cole Kmet and more work under new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Fields completed 5 of 7 passes for 39 yards, helping set up a 35-yard Cairo Santos field goal, the first … [Read more...] about Justin Fields’ connection with Cole Kmet highlights a short night for the Chicago Bears first-team offense

Wayfair is cutting 5% of its global workforce
New York (CNN Business) Wayfair is cutting nearly 900 jobs, or about 5% of the once-hot online retailer's global workforce, as it looks to regain its financial footing in a post-pandemic future. The company said in a regulatory filing that the cuts will help it "manage operating expenses and realign investment priorities." Shares fell about 14% in early trading Friday. CEO Niraj Shah wrote in an letter to employees that the layoffs were a "difficult decision" resulting from Covid-19. "We were seeing the tailwinds of the pandemic accelerate the adoption of e-commerce shopping, and I personally pushed hard to hire a strong team to support that growth," Shah wrote. "This year, that growth has not materialized as we had anticipated. Our team is too large for the environment we are now in, and unfortunately we need to adjust." Wayfair had flourished at the beginning of the pandemic, when demand for swanky furniture and other home decor upgrades was … [Read more...] about Wayfair is cutting 5% of its global workforce
War for the south: Ukraine sets its sights on regaining cities and towns lost to Russian troops
Mykolaiv, Ukraine (CNN) A Ukrainian reconnaissance team squats in a modest home in a village near Mykolaiv . Machine guns and army knapsacks line the walls, sleeping bags lie rolled out on the floor, and a pot of soup warms on the stove. Outside, the garden shed is stacked with Javelins and other shoulder-launched anti-tank weapons. The soldiers smoking on the porch hardly notice the boom of incoming artillery shells landing some 10 kilometers away. Today is not their turn to fight on Ukraine's southern front . The owners of the house, who fled to Poland after the war broke out in late February, are happy in the knowledge that their village is now back in Ukrainian hands. Senior Lieutenant Andrii Pidlisnyi was one of the soldiers that drove the Russians out two months ago. "At first, it was a defensive operation to stop them," he says. "After that we found some good places where we can make offensive operations and take back our territories. … [Read more...] about War for the south: Ukraine sets its sights on regaining cities and towns lost to Russian troops
Inside the Ukraine power plant raising the specter of nuclear disaster in Europe
By Eliza Mackintosh and Oleksandra Ochman, CNN Updated 0949 GMT (1749 HKT) August 13, 2022 Kyiv, Ukraine (CNN) Every day Olga is bused from her home in the Russian-occupied town of Enerhodar, on the banks of the Dnipro River in southeastern Ukraine, to the nearby Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant where she works. The plant, the largest nuclear complex of its kind in Europe, is the focal point of growing global concern after days of increased shelling have triggered calls for international experts to visit the facility and ratcheted fears of a potential nuclear accident . Kyiv has repeatedly accused Russian forces, which seized the plant in March, of storing heavy weaponry inside the complex and using it as cover to launch attacks, knowing that Ukraine can't return fire without risking hitting one of the plant's six reactors — a mistake that would spell disaster. Moscow, meanwhile, has claimed Ukrainian troops are targeting the site. Both sides have tried to point … [Read more...] about Inside the Ukraine power plant raising the specter of nuclear disaster in Europe
New rocket strike on Ukraine nuclear plant, as UN watchdog warns of ‘disaster’
(CNN) Ukraine accused Russian forces on Sunday of launching rockets at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant , further ratcheting fears of an accident a day after the United Nation's watchdog warned that fighting at the occupied complex risked a "nuclear disaster." It was the second time in as many days that the plant, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, was hit. Ukraine and Russia have traded blame for both attacks. The rockets launched on Saturday night struck near a dry storage facility, where 174 casks with spent nuclear fuel are kept, according to Energoatom, Ukraine's state-run nuclear power company. Explosions blew out windows in parts of the plant and one worker was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds. "Apparently, they aimed specifically at the containers with processed fuel, which are stored outside next to the site of shelling," the company said in a statement on Telegram. Three radiation monitoring detectors were also damaged on … [Read more...] about New rocket strike on Ukraine nuclear plant, as UN watchdog warns of ‘disaster’
