Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 6:33 PM EDT Aug 6, 2019 Matthew Stafford was in middle school when Tom Brady won his first Super Bowl, a promising young quarterback who hoped to play in the NFL one day. He emulated all manner of quarterbacks then, watching intently for something he could mimic in his own game. Things haven’t changed much in the last 20 years. Stafford is living his dream now, but he’s still watching and studying other quarterbacks, including Brady. “I think we all watched him on TV and games for a long time,” Stafford said Tuesday, after the Detroit Lions and Patriots held their second of three joint practices before Thursday’s preseason opener at Ford Field. “He’s extremely consistent, obviously a really talented guy. Likes to talk about where he got drafted and all that, but he’s got a lot of talent, too, so he still throws it really well. You can see it out there, he throws it great, so … [Read more...] about Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions’ new offense making progress

Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Apr 20, 2019 In Year 1, he was a complete unknown, a graduate of the prestigious Bill Belichick School of Football but someone without a track record of decision-making. In Year 2, we had a better read on his plan, but not enough data to be 100% confident in our findings. In Year 3, he was drafting for a new coach and a new defense, and those were wild cards we worried would gum up the mix. But now, as we get ready for Bob Quinn’s fourth draft as Detroit Lions general manager, we have some undeniably compelling information to work with. RELATED: Detroit Lions' Bob Quins explains why he'd like to trade down in NFL draft ► Quinn believes, beyond a shadow of a doubt, in building through the trenches. In 2016, he spent a first-round pick on an offensive lineman. In 2018, he did the same. And the one year he didn’t, he spent big on two offensive linemen in free agency. ► He values character and leadership … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions NFL draft: Alabama OL Jonah Williams checks every box
Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 4:04 PM EDT Apr 5, 2019 Before C.J. Anderson went on a three-game tear for the Los Angeles Rams late last season and into the playoffs, the new Detroit Lions running back had arguably the best game of his career against none other than his new head coach. The Lions made Anderson's signing official Friday, four days after he agreed to terms with the club on a one-year deal. Anderson worked out for the Lions last season and has been around the league since 2013, so he's not exactly an unfamiliar face. He had back-to-back 160-plus-yard rushing days with the Denver Broncos in his second season, but it was a game late in Year 3 that really put him on the map (and perhaps, knowing how much they value those things, on the current Lions regime's radar). The Broncos, with one of the NFL's best defenses, were on their way to winning a Super Bowl that season, but in late November of 2015 they looked like anything but a lock to get … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions RB C.J. Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 2:33 PM EST Jan 30, 2019 ATLANTA — Matthew Stafford isn't going anywhere this offseason. Lions general manager Bob Quinn made that clear at his end-of-season news conference earlier this month. But with local public sentiment starting to turn against him after 10 seasons, one prominent analyst and former NFL head coach said maybe the Lions quarterback should consider plying his trade elsewhere. "Frankly, maybe he does need to go someplace else for himself," NFL Network analyst Brian Billick said Wednesday at Super Bowl LIII. "Cause to carry that (burden of not making the playoffs) around after 10 years and to take on that responsibility, fair or not, like Joe Flacco. Joe Flacco will go someplace and I think not withstanding where he goes and who he goes with, could do very well. Joe Flacco’s a good quarterback." Stafford had a disappointing 2018 season as the Lions slumped to 6-10 and finished in last place in the … [Read more...] about Does Lions QB Matthew Stafford ‘need to go someplace else’?
Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 5:00 PM EST Jan 11, 2019 Good riddance, Vic Fangio. The Chicago Bears lost their excellent defensive coordinator this week, when the Denver Broncos hired him as their head coach. Under Fangio this season, Chicago's defense was third overall and first in scoring. Needless to say, the Bears’ loss is the Detroit Lions’ gain. So good riddance and good luck, Vic. And now that you’re out of the NFC North, how about a little horse trading for a certain quarterback you’re fond of? That’s right. Matthew Stafford. The stars could align for a trade that works out well for both teams. The Broncos need a quarterback. The Lions need an edge rusher, and though general manger Bob Quinn believes Stafford could win a Super Bowl in Detroit, he could easily find another quarterback to fit Matt Patricia's careful, balanced, ball-control offense.
