Denver March Powwow brings together Native American tribes working to preserve their ancient languages
Gripping a microphone, Tessa Holds The Enemy Abbey welcomed the crowd of hundreds on the last day of the Denver March Powwow in her Indigenous language first, then English. The 18-year-old traveled from Mandaree, N.D., to represent her people — the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation — as the 2022 Denver March Powwow Princess. At the powwow, she listens to other tribal members speak their languages and tries to pick up on them. Abbey’s spoken Hidatsa words since childhood, and is now teaching kids how to do the same. The MHA Language Project estimates that “less than 100 people speak Hidatsa fluently.” “My generation of people are going to be the ones that are going to save us,” Abbey said at the powwow Sunday. “Our language is still here. We’re still here.” That is one of the draws for many to the Denver March Powwow — to hear their centuries-old languages echoing throughout the Denver Coliseum. Native Americans in Colorado and beyond are striving to preserve these … [Read more...] about Denver March Powwow brings together Native American tribes working to preserve their ancient languages
U.S. Breezes Past Cuba and Into World Baseball Classic Final
MIAMI — It was a historic night , with the Cuban national baseball team playing in the city with the largest Cuban population in the United States, but the game itself was unable to match the intensity of the moment. Behind its star-studded offense, the United States dismantled Cuba, 14-2, at loanDepot Park on Sunday and advanced to the World Baseball Classic final. Trea Turner, the Philadelphia Phillies shortstop whose grand slam on Saturday propelled the United States to the semifinal , homered twice against Cuba. He drove in four runs in all, as did first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. And Goldschmidt’s St. Louis Cardinals teammate, the starter Adam Wainwright, led the United States pitching staff by allowing one run over four innings. The United States, which won the W.B.C. when it was last played in 2017, will now face the victor of Monday’s semifinal game between Mexico and Japan. The final will be on Tuesday night. “I haven’t hit a homer in spring training in like four or … [Read more...] about U.S. Breezes Past Cuba and Into World Baseball Classic Final
For Years She Said a Coach Abused Her. Now She Has Named a Legend.
In 2018, Jennifer Fox made an Emmy-nominated film called “The Tale” about her pieced-together memories of what she now describes as childhood sexual abuse. Laura Dern starred in the HBO drama, in which Fox unspooled what she remembered about the relationship she had as a 13-year-old with her 40-year-old coach. The details were horrific and unsettling, and the lingering pain of the main character, also called Jennifer, was palpable. But the coach was given a pseudonym in the lightly fictionalized film. Now, a half century after the relationship ended in 1973, Fox has come forward with the name of the man who she said abused her. She said it was Ted Nash, a two-time Olympic medalist in rowing and nine-time Olympic coach who had mythic status in the sport. Early in his athletic career, Nash also coached girls and women in running. “He was a very esteemed, very talented manipulator and beloved and looked good and acted right and had all the right credentials,” Fox told The … [Read more...] about For Years She Said a Coach Abused Her. Chicago Bears spring storylines: Ryan Poles’ patient approach, David Montgomery’s exit and DeMarcus Walker’s newfound purpose
The Chicago Bears roster is changing by the day. In an offseason defined by turnover, the Bears have added 10 players this month via trade or free agency. More new faces will be on the way as the latter waves of free agency hit the shore. The Bears also have 10 picks in next month’s draft and will continue to mold their team under the guidance of general manager Ryan Poles. As Poles crosses the bridge from free agency to the draft, here are three notable storylines to keep tabs on. ‘We can’t fix everything’ Two weeks before the free-agent market opened, Ryan Poles was asked for a realistic vision of what he could accomplish this spring. “You always have to be on your toes to adapt and adjust,” Poles said during the scouting combine in Indianapolis. “But at the end of the day, I’ll make it simple: (The goal) is to improve our football team and get as many guys on our roster who can help us do what we are trying to do — which is win a lot of games.” On Thursday morning, … [Read more...] about Chicago Bears spring storylines: Ryan Poles’ patient approach, David Montgomery’s exit and DeMarcus Walker’s newfound purpose

‘Kids nowadays can put in that kind of hours?’ Chef Bob dishes the dirt on F&B industry
Chef Bob is a well-known figure in the local food & beverage (F&B) scene. But even he has faced difficulties when it comes to running a restaurant in Singapore. On March 10, the chef and TV personality appeared as a guest on popular YouTuber JianHao Tan's The Titan Podcast and had a 50-minute chat about his experiences as an F&B business owner. He cited the lack of manpower as the biggest struggle when it came to opening and managing a restaurant. "I'm sorry to say this, but locals don't want to work in our line," Chef Bob said. Hiring and retaining staff was such a big issue that he and his wife would end up "always running" around the 100-seater restaurant trying to complete tasks. While he didn't name the restaurant, he mentioned that it has since closed down. One would think that being a public figure would help Chef Bob when it came to hiring staff but that wasn't the case. "I cannot pay whatever they are asking for," he explained, though he didn't … [Read more...] about ‘Kids nowadays can put in that kind of hours?’ Chef Bob dishes the dirt on F&B industry
Endure and survive: Orioles who lasted through rebuild grateful to be ‘on the other side’
Six years ago, before the Orioles’ most successful run in decades bottomed out, Anthony Santander surveyed the outfield at Double-A Bowie and made a proclamation to Cedric Mullins and Austin Hays. “We are the future of this organization,” he told them. As the Orioles prepare for their first full post-rebuild season, the trio is all part of Baltimore’s present. Pitchers John Means and Dillon Tate join Santander, Mullins and Hays as the five Orioles who played for the team each year from 2019 to now, a group that weathered the struggles through the rebuild to be part of the organization as it turns toward competitiveness. “You don’t want to go back,” Means said. “You want to stay as far away from those years as possible.” After a five-year stretch as the American League’s winningest team from 2012 to 2016, the Orioles collapsed to close the 2017 season, a prelude to a franchise-worst 115-loss campaign in 2018 in which they traded away many of their established players. That … [Read more...] about Endure and survive: Orioles who lasted through rebuild grateful to be ‘on the other side’
