DOLPHINS DEFENSE Wide receiver Keenan Allen was a one-man show last week in the loss against the Houston Texans, with 17 targets for 13 catches, two touchdowns and a career-high 183 yards. The solo act wasn’t enough versus the Texans, but it might be against the lowly Dolphins defense, which has been outscored by 117 points, a modern-day NFL record through three games. The Chargers wouldn’t mind another outburst from Allen, the NFL’s leader in targets (42), receptions (29) and yards (404), but they likely want to see another wide receiver step up. The Miami Dolphins released wide receiver Danny Amendola on Friday, creating $6 million in salary cap space. The 33-year-old former Patriot had 59 receptions for 575 yards last year, both team highs, while making 15 starts in his first season with Miami. He has 485 career receptions. The Dolphins, 7-9 in 2018, are cutting payroll and veterans as they begin rebuilding under new coach Brian Flores, who was the Patriots defensive play-caller last season. Amendola played in New England from 2013-17, catching 230 passes for 2,383 yards and 12 touchdowns. Browns to get Vernon The Browns agreed to acquire defensive end Olivier Vernon from the Giants in exchange for guard Kevin Zeitler, according to a person familiar with the deal. The teams are also swapping draft picks, with the Browns getting No. 132 for pick No. 155. Detroit News staff and wires Published 4:26 PM EST Feb 8, 2019 Miami – Former Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell has been hired by new Dolphins coach Brian Flores as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Caldwell was among 16 members of Flores’ staff announced Friday. The group includes new offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, both former Patriots assistants. Caldwell has 17 years of NFL coaching experience. In his seven seasons as head coach of the Colts (2009-11) and Lions (2014-17), he led teams to four playoff berths. Caldwell’s record with the Lions was 36-28 in the regular season, and 0-2 in the playoffs. Caldwell was fired by the Lions after a 9-7 finish in 2017. Caldwell also won two Super Bowls as an assistant coach with the Colts and Ravens.
