Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 DENVER (AP) — The fliers piled up in mailboxes in central South Dakota like snow during a high-plains blizzard: “Transgender Sex Education in Schools?” one asked. “Vote Against Sex Ed Radical Mary Duvall for State Senate.” The mailers were part of a $58,000 campaign against the five-term Republican lawmaker, an enormous sum of money in a place where the cost of running for a statehouse seat is typically in the low five figures. Despite the subject of the attack ads, Duvall was targeted not for her stance on sex education but for her opposition to a longshot bid by some conservatives to force a convention to amend the U.S. Constitution. “I knew they were angry at me, but I had no idea this was going to be coming during my primary campaign,” said Duvall, who ended up losing her race by 176 votes. Duvall opposed legislation that would have added South Dakota to 19 other … [Read more...] about GOP spends big in state-level effort to change Constitution

How Google found itself under pressure from all sides after Roe’s demise
New York (CNN Business) In mid-June, one week before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, more than 20 Congressional Democrats wrote a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. In it, they urged the company to prevent searches for abortion clinics from returning results and ads that direct users to facilities that actually oppose the procedure, noting it could put women's health at risk. The next month, 17 Republican attorneys general wrote a letter to Pichai pushing for the opposite. They argued that any move to suppress pro-life search results at the behest of Democratic officials "would violate the most fundamental tenet of the American marketplace of ideas" and also "actively harm women seeking essential assistance." A big question for tech companies post-Roe: How to respond to law enforcement requests for data? The dueling reactions highlighted a new political flashpoint for Google. The tech giant has long faced concerns from lawmakers about its vast … [Read more...] about How Google found itself under pressure from all sides after Roe’s demise
He’s anti-gay and a race extremist. He’s running unopposed for a Bay Area school board seat
A candidate running unopposed for one of the seats on the Morgan Hill school board wrote that modern descendants of slaves are “so much better off” than if their ancestors “had been left in the country that they came from.” Dennis Delisle also opposes homosexuality and gay marriage, according to a self-published book he wrote in 2012, and likes to quote a founding father who believed “the number one purpose of public schools is to teach youth, young people, the Word of God.” Unless another candidate steps forward in the next few days, Delisle will automatically win the seat, his race for the Area 3 position not even appearing on the November ballot — a cost-saving state policy that applies to unopposed candidates in school board and special elections. Yet Delisle is one of more than 100 candidates across the Bay Area currently running unopposed for a seat on a school board. If no challengers step forward at the 11th hour, their names will never even appear on a ballot because … [Read more...] about He’s anti-gay and a race extremist.
