Jimmy Golen Associated Press Published 5:28 AM EDT Nov 1, 2018 San Francisco — Willie McCovey, the sweet-swinging Hall of Famer nicknamed “Stretch” for his 6-foot-4 height and those long arms, died Wednesday. He was 80. The San Francisco Giants announced McCovey’s death, saying the fearsome hitter passed “peacefully” in the afternoon “after losing his battle with ongoing health issues.” A former first baseman and left fielder, McCovey was a career .270 hitter with 521 home runs and 1,555 RBIs in 22 major league seasons, 19 of them with the Giants. He also played for the Athletics and Padres. McCovey made his major league debut at age 21 on July 30, 1959, after dominating the Pacific Coast League that year. The Red Sox aren’t the only team Tom Brady is rooting for in the MLB playoffs
Tom Brady is apparently a man of many baseball teams. The California native grew up with the San Francisco Giants as his hometown team and was once spotted wearing (gasp) a New York Yankees hat in 2007. But during his weekly WEEI interview Monday morning, the New England Patriots quarterback — perhaps smartly — declared that his loyalties are with the Boston Red Sox in their American League Division Series against the Yankees. “The best teams rise to the occasion, and hopefully the Red Sox do,” Brady said, after being asked about dealing with increased pressure during the playoffs. “I know everyone is rooting for them,” he added. “I certainly am. But this year marks four years since the Tigers were last in the playoffs, and judging by back-to-back 98-loss seasons, nobody can say — at least not with a straight face — when the hell they'll be back. 2018 MLB PLAYOFF SCHEDULE But, as has become the norm in recent years, as first Dave Dombrowski and then Al Avila have peddled off the team's biggest names, several former Tigers will play October baseball in search of that Holy Grail, the World Series championship, which Justin Verlander won with the Astros a year ago, and just might do it again in 2018. Some 20 players who formerly called Detroit home, as well as several current managers and coaches, are participating in this fall's postseason. Here's a look at all of them: AMERICAN LEAGUE Boston Red Sox (AL East champions) ►Ian Kinsler, … [Read more...] about Who’s your (ex) Tiger? Nearly 20 set to participate in MLB postseason
