The short-video app, with more than 1 billion monthly active users, has emerged as one of the music industry’s most powerful promotional platforms. Several of this year's Grammy nominees, including "abcdefu" singer Gayle and R&B artist Muni Long, rose in popularity after influencers and everyday users posted TikTok videos with their music. "TikTok is 90 percent of the game," said Adamm Miguest, CEO and founder of Rapid Launch Media, which creates marketing campaigns designed to make songs go viral. Even as the music industry gathers in Los Angeles to celebrate artists and their songs at Sunday's Grammy awards, the relationship between hitmaker TikTok and music labels is showing signs of strain. As deals with the major music companies expire, the labels are looking to receive some of TikTok's ad revenue, according to Tatiana Cirisano, music industry analyst for Midia Research. EMarketer estimates TikTok will collect $14 billion from advertisers this year. One industry … [Read more...] about From Lizzo to Gayle, Grammy nominees highlight TikTok’s sway in music

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 Before the internet age, artists, community leaders and organizations in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood would drop off posters at the library that highlighted social justice issues, protests and cultural events in the Bay Area. Over the past 50 years, the librarians at the then-called Latin American branch - the first branch in the U.S. dedicated to the Spanish-speaking community - archived and have since collected more than 250 posters, a majority of them stored in boxes. This year the library unveiled a digital version of the collection on its website - which library staff said was a way of “returning” them to the community. The curse of the Fall
I t was the middle of 2007. I was driving around a rundown suburb of Manchester, the sort of place where the windows are all boarded up and my shiny car attracted attention. In my hand, I clutched a scruffy piece of paper with an address for one Karl E Burns. I had no idea whether this was indeed the Karl E Burns who played drums in the Fall until a gig in 1998. He quit as the band imploded on stage in New York and was never seen again. I was on a mission to find him. It all began in 2005, when I wrote a piece for this paper after interviewing Mark E Smith and tracking down many of the (then) 43 musicians who had played in the Fall since 1976. A publisher got in touch and suggested I write a book, based on my quest to find the members of the band I'd become obsessed with. This was the genesis of The Fallen, a two-year search that cost me my peace of mind - as well as my 17-year relationship with my girlfriend. My journey took me around the country: to Salford, to meet … [Read more...] about The curse of the Fall
