Photo from Ironman 70.3 Facebook DAVAO CITY—A participant in the Ironman 70.3 race here on Sunday has died, race organizers have confirmed. “The athlete required medical attention during the swim portion of the race and was transported to a nearby hospital,” read Alveo Ironman Davao’s post on Facebook. Local reports have identified the fatality as 49-year-old Jerry Kasim, a veteran swimming coach who hails from Davao. Kasim’s reported passing comes at a time when a spectator from Panabo City figured in a collision with an athlete during the bike leg of the endurance contest. Gerald Tayag, 18, a resident of Barangay San Vicente in Panabo, attempted to pickup a water container in the hope of preventing any further accidents. The teen was hit by 55-year-old David Smith, according to a dispatch from the Panabo City Fire Station. Smith represents Century Tri Hard and was competing as a 55-59 age grouper. Daughter of woman who died after being set alight by monster boyfriend calls for murder trial
A woman whose mother died two years after being set alight by her boyfriend says he should now face trial for her murder. Ellen Marshall, 43, suffered burns over up to 90 per cent of the top half of her body from the horrific attack in April 2021. The mum-of-four struggled to breathe independently and was given a 50 per cent chance of survival. She bravely clung to life for almost two years until her death at Nottingham City Hospital on March 11. The nightmare unravelled during a petty disagreement between Ms Marshall and her boyfriend Leigh Pateman. Following the argument, Pateman, 43, poured petrol over Ms Marshall from a jerry can and used a lighter to ignite it. He then fled on his bike and left Ms Marshall for dead after pouring two bowls of water over her at her flat in Skegness, Lincolnshire. Man dies of gunshot wounds in East Oakland early Sunday
Police found the victim of an apparent homicide early Sunday near Interstate 580 in East Oakland. Officers responding to a ShotSpotter activation at around 3 a.m. found a man with a gunshot wound on the 1200 block of East 34th Street, near 13th Avenue. He later died of his injuries. Police declined to identify the victim pending notification of next of kin or release any other information. KTVU reported that the victim was a 23-year-old Stockton man. The 1200 block of East 34th Street is a residential neighborhood off Park Boulevard, bordering the Cleveland Heights and Bella Vista neighborhoods. Some 29 migrants died over the weekend after their boats sank off the coast of Tunisia while heading to Italy, officials said. The Tunisian National Guard said the migrants who died while trying to make the perilous journey crossing the Mediterranean Sea were mostly from sub-Saharan Africa. Tunisian fishermen recovered 19 bodies, National Guard spokesman Houssameddine Jebabli said. The Coast Guard also recovered eight bodies on Sunday night and rescued 11 survivors aboard a boat that went down. Two more bodies were recovered in the waters off the Tunisian port of Sfax. A mum has received some harsh reaction after revealing the name she's picked out for her newborn baby daughter, which some people reckon has scary connotations. Introducing her little girl to the world, the proud mum declared she was the "perfect addition" to their family, but not everybody is too sure about the name. The unique moniker in question is "Sissie Tru", which certainly isn't a name you hear every day, and some reckon it sounds a little too like "the first person to die in a horror film." ‘Cruel’ mum failed to get help for baby who was ‘clearly not well’ days before he died
A "cruel" mum failed to get medical help for her seven-week-old baby who was "not well" days before he died, a court heard. Kayleigh Clarke and her partner Michael Higginson did not call for help when little Ronnie got sick at their home in Stoke-on-Trent. When the alarm was raised it was too late as paramedics found Ronnie in cardiac arrest at the property on Derwent Street, in Cobridge, at 8.55pm on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. He died in hospital less than 30 minutes later, reports Stoke-on-Trent Live . Both defendants denied a charge of child cruelty by neglect, but they were convicted by a jury after a trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court last October. Now Clarke has been jailed for 27 months and Higginson has been sentenced to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years.
