The funny business started when we entered the dining room at the chic Chautauqua Harbor Hotel. We couldn’t help but notice a party of diners sporting Groucho Marx glasses, complete with bushy eyebrows and giant schnozzolas. “They’ll get a free dessert if they wear the Groucho getup,” our server explained. “It’s part of a package we offer with the National Comedy Center. Funny, huh?” Perhaps there’s something in the air in New York’s Chautauqua County that spawns hilarity. Comedy legend Lucille Ball is a native, and — although she died in 1989 — she is vividly present here. Andrew Cuomo and fellow Democrats who control the Legislature have reached a deal to make New York the third state with a ban on single-use plastic grocery bags as they worked to finalize budget agreements, officials said Friday. The ban would prohibit grocery stores from providing plastic bags for most purchases, something California has been doing since a statewide ban was approved in 2016. Hawaii has an effective statewide ban, with all its counties imposing their own restrictions. Supporters of such bans say they keep plastic bags from entering the environment and causing damage to ecosystems and waterways. “With this smart, multi-pronged action New York will be leading the way to protect our natural resources now and for future generations of New Yorkers,” Cuomo, who proposed a ban in his $175 billion budget proposal, said in a statement Friday. If you’re booked on a Norwegian flight to Dublin out of T.F. Green International Airport in Providence, the airline will send you by bus to New York to catch a plane, the company announced on Wednesday. Norwegian has temporarily suspended service on its fleet of 18 Boeing 737 Max 8 planes following Sunday’s Ethiopia Airlines crash in Addis Ababa and the October Lion Air crash in Indonesia, both involving Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. Norwegian used Boeing 737 Max 8 planes between T.F. Green and the the Ireland destinations of Cork, Dublin, and Shannon, as well as for service at two other North American airports: New York Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, N.Y., and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Mount Hope, Ontario.
