Big change could mean thousands on benefits and Universal Credit get pay rise
THOUSANDS on benefits and Universal Credit could see a pay rise as incomes are squeezed in the cost of living crisis. It comes as the benefit cap could be raised after six years of remaining the same. Since 2013, families seeking benefits and Universal Credit have faced a limit to the amount they can get and that amount has not risen since 2016. But now the government has hinted that the cap could be raised to combat soaring living costs . Therese Coffey, Work and Pensions secretary said she may review the cap as she's "slightly concerned as to whether we have a real reflection of life" in the figure. There's no guarantee that the limit will be increased, but a review could happen between now and April next year when the annual uprating of benefits takes effect. (AP) — The largest electric provider in New Mexico on Friday outlined the savings that customers will see from the closure of a coal-fired power plant as part of a filing mandated by state utility regulators. The document was required to be submitted by July 1 as part of a financing order related to the San Juan Generating Station. The plant was set to shut down at the end of June, but regulators are allowing Public Service Co. of New Mexico to keep open one unit through September to meet peak summer demands. The utility is appealing the final order, warning that applying the short-term credit now would result in higher rates later. Consumer advocacy groups praised the Public Regulation Commission's decision to force the utility to apply the credit as the plant shuts down rather than wait for the next rate case. They say the first rate credit would provide a … [Read more...] about New Mexico customers to save monthly with coal plant closure

New first-time buyer scheme opens for applications today – everything you need to know
A new first-time buyer scheme designed for people who want to build their own home has opened for applications today. Help to Build allows successful candidates to build or commission a house with a 5% deposit towards land and building costs. The average cost of a deposit for a self and custom build is normally around 25% - meaning most people are currently priced out of building their own home. The 5% deposit would need to be with a lender registered with Help to Build, which is only available in England. Once approved, applicants would then be able to borrow an equity loan of between 5% and 20% - or up to 40% in London - once the work is completed. This in effect reduces your overall mortgage - but the equity loan does need to be paid back. No interest is charged on the equity loan for the first five years. You start to pay interest from year six, at a rate of 1.75%. From year seven, the amount of interest you pay increases each April in lined with the Consumer … [Read more...] about New first-time buyer scheme opens for applications today – everything you need to know
