The Miami Heat announced Wednesday that Orlando Robinson has a fractured right thumb, with the undrafted rookie center expected to miss several weeks. Robinson played 10:41 in Tuesday night’s 100-97 road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, including 4:27 in the second half, closing with three points and three rebounds. Robinson said he believes he sustained the injury during the third quarter, when an entry pass to him was slapped out of his hand by Cleveland power forward Evan Mobley. Robinson had been playing as the sole backup to starting center Bam Adebayo, with veteran big man Dewayne Dedmon yet to see action since he was suspended for one game for conduct detrimental to the team, after he exchanged words with coach Erik Spoelstra during the Jan. 10 home victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Heat’s depth at center has been depleted with second-year center Omer Yurtseven only last week making it back to contact work after November ankle surgery, and rookie big … [Read more...] about Heat’ center Orlando Robinson out with thumb fracture; Victor Oladipo (ankle) doubtful vs. Knicks

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The sweet smell of green chile roasting on an open flame permeates New Mexico every fall, wafting from roadside stands and grocery store parking lots and inducing mouth-watering visions of culinary wonders. Now one state lawmaker says it's time for everyone to wake up and smell the chile. Sen. Bill Soules' visit with fifth grade students in his southern district sparked a conversation about the savory hot peppers and the potential for New Mexico to become the first state in the nation to proudly have an official state aroma, a proposal now being considered by lawmakers. “It’s very unique to our state,” the Las Cruces Democrat said of roasting chile. “I have tried to think of any other state that has a smell or aroma that is that distinctive statewide, and I can’t think of any.” For New Mexico, chile is more than a key … [Read more...] about New Mexico considers roasted chile as official state aroma

Inside Nasa’s new fake Moon created to test out conditions for upcoming human missions
NASA has unveiled an ultra-realistic fake Moon environment that it will use to simulate activities on the lunar surface. The US space agency has big plans for the Moon within the next decade including putting humans on its surface again. The fake Moon is said to have realistic lunar lighting and conditions that astronauts will experience when they stand on the real thing. Nasa will also be testing out some of its new robots on the fake Moon. This includes the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), which is Nasa's latest Moon robot. The lunar experiment is officially called the Lunar Lab and Regolith Testbed and it's located in Nasa's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley. The fake Moon is technically made up of two large sandy areas filled with simulated lunar dust. The first lunar "sandbox" has been around for a few years but the second one is brand new and full of 20 tons of lunar dust. Plans to bring $5 billion megaproject with housing, restaurants and a convention center to Oakland Coliseum move forward
Plans to bring housing, a new convention center and possibly a WNBA team to the Oakland Coliseum moved one step ahead last week after a developer signed a deal to exclusively negotiate with the city to build on the high-profile site. The African American Sports and Entertainment Group is also hoping to build a hotel, restaurants and an outdoor amphitheater for youth sports and educational programs at the site. Under their vision, the renovated Coliseum could welcome a WNBA team, music concerts and Disney on Ice events. Past estimates by AASEG put the price tag of the development at north of $5 billion. The city, which owns half of the Coliseum site, agreed to begin negotiations with AASEG in November 2021. The signing of the exclusive negotiation agreement requires the developer to pay the city a $200,000-per-year fee and $2.5 million in one-time funds to cover staff time. Half of the site is owned by the A’s, which have their own plans for the land they own. AASEG is a … [Read more...] about Plans to bring $5 billion megaproject with housing, restaurants and a convention center to Oakland Coliseum move forward

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 KILDARE, Ireland (AP) — St. Patrick has long received the attention and the big parades, but another patron saint of Ireland is making a 21st century comeback. St. Brigid of Kildare, a younger contemporary of St. Patrick, is quietly and steadily gaining a following, in Ireland and abroad. Devotees see Brigid, and the ancient Irish goddess whose name and attributes she shares, as emblematic of feminine spirituality and empowerment. For the first time this year, Ireland is observing a public holiday in honor of St. Brigid’s Day and Imbolc, an ancient pagan holy day associated with the goddess Brigid and heralding the coming of spring. The official holiday is Monday, but celebrations began in earnest this week. The holiday designation, the first honoring a woman in Ireland, comes 120 years after St. Patrick got … [Read more...] about Ireland celebrates ‘matron saint’ with prayers, new holiday
‘Game changer’: New S.F homeless housing gives hope, but thousands still live in dilapidated hotels
A new oasis for San Francisco’s formerly homeless has just opened on Mission Street — a housing complex painted with warm reds and yellows and graced with high ceilings, a lush courtyard and big windows for the sun to splash in. All the rooms at 1064 Mission St. in SoMa have their own bathrooms and kitchenettes and — perhaps most importantly — there’s abundant space dedicated to mental health care, where clinicians can connect with residents like 61-year-old Michael Jackson. “My quality of life is getting back to normal, slowly but surely,” said Jackson, who had been homeless for several years before moving into 1064 Mission. “You get a lot of support here.” San Francisco’s newest permanent supportive housing building is now home to 256 of the city’s most vulnerable, who can get much-needed mental health support, job training and community events on-site. It’s an example of what can happen when city resources and political will align. The cheerful, sleek design and on-site … [Read more...] about ‘Game changer’: New S.F homeless housing gives hope, but thousands still live in dilapidated hotels
