The curse of the Fall
I t was the middle of 2007. I was driving around a rundown suburb of Manchester, the sort of place where the windows are all boarded up and my shiny car attracted attention. In my hand, I clutched a scruffy piece of paper with an address for one Karl E Burns. I had no idea whether this was indeed the Karl E Burns who played drums in the Fall until a gig in 1998. He quit as the band imploded on stage in New York and was never seen again. I was on a mission to find him. It all began in 2005, when I wrote a piece for this paper after interviewing Mark E Smith and tracking down many of the (then) 43 musicians who had played in the Fall since 1976. A publisher got in touch and suggested I write a book, based on my quest to find the members of the band I'd become obsessed with. This was the genesis of The Fallen, a two-year search that cost me my peace of mind - as well as my 17-year relationship with my girlfriend. My journey took me around the country: to Salford, to meet … [Read more...] about The curse of the Fall

Woman, 19, accused of faking cancer diagnosis on TikTok before raking in $37,000
A 19-year-old woman is accused of stealing over $37,000 (£30,000) from hundreds of benevolent donors after faking having cancer , authorities said. Medical professionals reported Madison Marie Russo to the police after seeing the videos she was uploading on TikTok, pretending she was undertaking chemotherapy. They said the staged photos of her with medical equipment placed on her body had "terrible life-threatening inaccuracies". She reportedly had transformed her apartment in Bettendorf, Iowa, into a fake hospital, and police found several pieces of evidence for the alleged scam, such as an IV pole with a feeding pump which she had filled with cotton balls. Russo also stole photos of cancer patients posted on social media and shared them as her own, according to the police. She claimed publicly that doctors had given her a five-year ultimatum after her supposed diagnosis in February 2022. Petrol prices FALL but should be even lower as retailers charge 10p per litre more than normal
PETROL prices plummeted by nearly 7p a litre last month - the sixth biggest monthly drop since 2000. But drivers should have seen a further 10p reduction if retailers squashed their margins, according to RAC Fuel Watch. The price of petrol fell from 169.58p a litre to 162.89p a litre in September - saving drivers £2.68 on an average full tank. Since unleaded peaked on July 3 at 191.53p, almost 29p has come off a litre leading to a saving of nearly £16 on a tank. Diesel prices also dropped from 183.74p a litre to 180.16 in the same period. This is 19p cheaper than its all-time high price of 199.09p back on June 25 - meaning that the cost of a tank has fallen by £10 on average.
