Paul Klee's rapid reactions from Southern California after the Broncos beat the Chargers: 1. Colorado’s long nightmare is over, and Vic Fangio celebrated his first win as a head coach with hugs from his players. The losing streak ended after eight games and 308 days. And the Broncos were not afraid to trash talk the Chargers through every second of a mostly lopsided win Sunday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park. The Broncos had not won a game since Dec. 2, 2018, so it’s no wonder Kareem Jackson was feeling his oats after a touchdown-saving tackle of Austin Ekeler to close the first half. Denver’s defense locked up the win with a clutch goal-line stand, and the Broncos are back on the board. Just one question: What took so long?2. One key to the Broncos' rebuild: keeping Mike Munchak around. If the offensive line guru is strutting around UCHealth Training Center, no one should blink an eye. How the Chargers and Steelers match up
Chargers (2-3) vs. Pittsburgh (1-4)When Chargers have the ballThe offense has turned the ball over four times in goal-to-go situations. And now comes a Pittsburgh defense that has recovered six fumbles, tied for the most in the NFL. The Chargers had two such turnovers last week in their 20-13 loss at home to Denver. The offense failed to reach the end zone against the Broncos and has gone 13 possessions without a touchdown dating to the fourth quarter of the Miami game in Week 4. Melvin Gordon will be making his second appearance after ending his nine-week holdout, and the Chargers are going to need more from him than the 38 total yards he picked up in 16 touches in his 2019 debut. The Steelers are 12th-best in the NFL against the run, one spot behind a Denver defense that limited the Chargers to 35 yards rushing. Wide receiver Keenan Allen also will be looking to bounce back after being essentially removed from the game a week ago by the Broncos’ sagging, big-play-preventing … [Read more...] about How the Chargers and Steelers match up
There seems to be something different about this year’s Texans
But there’s something different about the 2019 Texans, who improved to 4-2 with a 31-24 win at Kansas City Sunday. That Patriots-Chiefs rematch in the AFC Championship game most of us are hoping for? The Texans look like they could spoil those plans. Their big statement win is where we begin the Week 6 review: ■ The problem with the Texans since their inception has been that they haven’t been able to find a quarterback. Matt Schaub had a few good years, but it has mostly been an inept bunch led by David Carr, Brock Osweiler, and Tom Savage. The Texans sure have a franchise quarterback now, though. Deshaun Watson is in the early conversation for 2019 MVP, with 12 touchdown passes, three interceptions, a 107.9 passer rating, and five rushing touchdowns. A torn ACL in 2017 ended that season and slowed Watson’s development last year. But he had a healthy 2019 offseason, and the Texans are rolling this year, winning four of their last five games. The … [Read more...] about There seems to be something different about this year’s Texans
