The Detroit News Published 5:30 PM EDT Jul 22, 2019 The eve of NFL training camp can bring plenty of optimism, even for fans of a Detroit Lions franchise that hasn't won a playoff game since 1991. Nate Davis of USA Today is offering an ice-cold bucket of water to temper any lofty expectations. Davis on Monday unveiled his projections for each NFL team, saddling the Lions with a 3-13 record — tied for the worst in the NFL with four other teams. That's dead last in the NFC North — six games worse than the projected third-place Green Bay Packers. "Difficult to envision coach Matt Patricia improving on his 6-10 debut," Davis writes. "Four of their eight home dates come against 2018 playoff outfits — a figure that doesn't include the Packers or Vikings. Two West Coast trips (Week 1 in Arizona, Week 9 in Oakland) in season's first half unlikely to help, either." The other three-win teams in USA Today's projections: the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions will share NFL’s worst record, writer predicts

Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Dec 29, 2018 Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett breaks down Sunday's game between the Detroit Lions (5-10) and Green Bay Packers (6-8-1) at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin: Lions run offense vs. Packers run defense The Lions have averaged a shade over 4 yards per carry in the five games they’ve played without Kerryon Johnson, and they’re bound to lean on the running game again Sunday given their lack of weapons on offense. Johnson had a solid day against the Packers back in October, when he ran for 70 yards on 12 carries, and Green Bay’s defense has taken some hits since that game. The Packers have lost three starters in their front seven to injury, Kenny Clark, Mike Daniels and Nick Perry, and have a middle-of-the-pack rush defense overall. Zach Zenner, LeGarrette Blount and Theo Riddick should split time in the backfield for the Lions on Sunday, though Zenner has been the team’s most … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions vs. Packers: Scouting report, prediction
Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 12:12 PM EST Dec 27, 2018 It’s mailbag time! Every week in season, Dave Birkett will answer your Detroit Lions questions. Send them via Twitter to @davebirkett or by email to [email protected] Q. Would the Lions seriously consider a QB at 5? - @hockeydad1999 A. The last mailbag of the regular season is here and there’s no better place to start than the question that’s sure to dominate the next few months: Matthew Stafford's future. Stafford still has four years left on the massive contract extension that he signed last summer. Sentiment in this town has absolutely turned against him as quarterback, and one NFL source predicted to ESPN in a story this week that the Lions will trade Stafford this offseason. As I’ve written before, I don’t think that happens, though it will certainly be one of the first questions I ask Bob Quinn when his annual postseason news conference gets underway hopefully next … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions mailbag: Could Lions take QB high in NFL draft?
By Associated Press | PUBLISHED: December 27, 2018 at 9:12 am | UPDATED: December 27, 2018 at 9:45 am By JOE REEDY Terry Bradshaw thought his career as a football analyst was over in 1993 when CBS lost the NFL rights to Fox. But instead of going back to cattle ranching, he has had a front-row seat to the biggest sports broadcasting startup of the past quarter-century. “It seems like an eternity. We all have occasionally talked about where we started. We’ve had all of these innovations that has transformed broadcasting on television,” Bradshaw said. It was Bradshaw who helped usher in Fox’s coverage of the NFL in 1994 riding a horse around Los Angeles before arriving at the Fox set in Hollywood. That entrance helped set the tone that still drives the network’s coverage and has included eight Super Bowls. “Terry is what Fox attitude is all about,” said Joe Buck, who has gone from one of the announcers for regional games to the voice of … [Read more...] about How Fox’s 25 seasons of doing NFL has changed the game
Detroit Free Press Staff Published 12:13 PM EST Dec 15, 2018 Free Press sports writers and columnists predict Sunday's game at New Era Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., between the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills (1 p.m., Fox). More: Lions vs. Bills: Scouting report and prediction Jeff Seidel Bills 16, Lions 13: Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has a bad back, and the Bills have a great pass defense. The Bills have a sputtering offense and that’s putting it kindly. All in all, this sounds painful and totally unwatchable. Maybe, the Lions keep their playoff hopes alive. Because that would be the Lions thing to do. But I doubt it. More from Seidel: Lions fans: Save your children from the misery you have felt Carlos Monarrez Bills 17, Lions 14: It’s going to be a replay of last week’s defensive struggle at Arizona. The big difference is that Buffalo has the NFL’s top-ranked defense and the Lions are even more banged up than they were against the … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions predictions vs. Buffalo Bills: Sparse scoring
