El Salvador beyond bitcoin
San Salvador, El Salvador—This Central American country has been making global headlines over the past couple of years, largely because of its president, Nayib Bukele, and his embrace of bitcoin: In 2021, it became the first (and only) country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, and notwithstanding the volatility of the cryptocurrency, Bukele’s government plans to double down on his investment by issuing “Volcano Bonds” and building a geothermal energy-powered “Bitcoin City.” As I would discover in my weeklong trip, however, there is more to El Salvador than bitcoin, and there is more to Bukele than his being the ultimate cryptocurrency “whale.” In fact, while bitcoin signs are emblazoned all over the country (and even its Miss Universe candidate), there are little signs of everyday bitcoin use. Laughingly, people tell me that many downloaded the cryptocurrency wallet (named Chivo, meaning “cool”) just to receive the $30 worth of bitcoin, after which they discarded the app. Of all … [Read more...] about El Salvador beyond bitcoin

Biden border plan expands use of 1950s-era immigration parole powers
The Biden administration has greenlit an expanded use of a 1950s-era program to allow tens of thousands of migrants temporary residency in the United States for humanitarian or other urgent reasons, deepening its use of executive authority to shape border policy. The newer approach to the program, known as parole, offers entry to migrants from specific countries under special conditions, such as applying online. The U.S. will accept up to 30,000 migrants a month from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, while also tightening border enforcement. While previous administrations have used parole to deal with emergencies or humanitarian challenges, Biden has made more frequent use of the authority than any other president. A previous use of the program, launched in October and limited to Venezuelans, had a one-time cap of 24,000. Biden officials say they are taking an innovative approach and using the legal tools available to manage a dysfunctional system cracking from decades of … [Read more...] about Biden border plan expands use of 1950s-era immigration parole powers
