(AP) — Some Florida schools have moved library books and debated changing textbooks in response to a law critics call “Don’t Say Gay” — and some teachers have worried that family pictures on their desks could get them in trouble. As students return from summer break, educators are cautiously adjusting and waiting to see how the new law governing lessons on gender and sexual orientation will be interpreted and enforced. The new law, championed by Florida’s GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade as well as material that is not deemed age-appropriate. Most educators do not expect a major change in lesson plans — one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway. But some worry it sets a … [Read more...] about So-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law confuses some Florida schools

Pandemic casualty: 107-year-old Manila school announces 2022 shutdown

Afghanistan: ‘Don’t use restrictions on girls’ education against us’, says senior Taliban leader
Girls' rights to education in Afghanistan will be solved with "the passage of time" and should not be a "condition for aid" from the international community, a senior Taliban leader has told Sky News. Anas Haqqani made the remarks as the Taliban marks one year since it captured the Afghan capital Kabul and regained control of the country following the US-led withdrawal after a 20-year campaign. International funding to Afghanistan was later suspended and billions of dollars of the country's assets abroad were frozen due to the Taliban's human rights abuses and stance on issues such as women's rights. Asked whether it would be a good idea for his government to compromise on issues such as allowing girls to have a secondary school education in exchange for aid, Mr Haqqani said: "Regarding education, the Islamic Emirates has made its decision clear to everyone that this issue is one of many incomplete issues across the ministries. "This part of the education sector needs … [Read more...] about Afghanistan: ‘Don’t use restrictions on girls’ education against us’, says senior Taliban leader
Space boffin wants alien hunters to be more diverse – to stop people becoming alienist
A space boffin has called for more diversity among ET hunters - to stop Earthlings becoming alienist. Science historian Rebecca Charbonneau wants indigenous people - such as American Indians - involved in the search for extraterrestrial life as they know what it is like to have their country colonised by invaders. She believes their experiences could help explorers seeking out intergalactic life from making the same mistakes as those on Earth where were seized and native populations displaced and mistreated.
