Updated 5:36 am CDT, Tuesday, October 8, 2019 LIEVIN, France (AP) — The Louvre has opened a new art conservation center some 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Paris to protect the museum's priceless artworks from its flood-prone reserves. The Louvre Conservation Center was inaugurated Tuesday in Lievin in northern France, near another outpost of the museum, the Louvre-Lens. Protecting the museum's works from the nearby Seine River has taken on additional urgency in recent years, as severe floods in 2016 and 2018 forced the Louvre to evacuate artworks and close exhibits. Officials hope to store some 250,000 artworks at the new center in five years' time. About half of the newly-constructed building's sprawling space will house art from the famed Paris museum, the world's biggest. Ha Van Thanh, 38, Lo Thi Lap, 45 and Ha Thi Thanh, 41, were sentenced to death, while Hoang Van Hung, 23 and Nguyen Van Hieu, 43, were sentenced to life in prison. Bui Minh Quang, 18, was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Another suspect, Tran Phuong Lan of Hanoi, is still on the run. In July last year, a police raid on Thanh’s house in Muong Sang Commune, Moc Chau District, netted over 7.6 kg of heroin and meth, prosecutors said. Further investigation led to the arrests of Quang, Hung, Lap, Thanh and Hieu. All of them were charged with trading drugs. Quang was found to have traded over 21 kg of heroin and meth, Thanh, 6.2 kg; Lap, 3.5 kg; Thanh, 3 kg; and Hieu, 2.5 kg. A Northern California county is ending its decade-old contract with the federal government to house troubled immigrant children.The Sacramento Bee reports that the Yolo County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to end its contract with the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement to house migrant teenagers in a high-security detention center in Woodland.The facility west of Sacramento is one of two in the nation for teens who have entered the country unaccompanied by a parent and are considered a danger to themselves or others.The center can house up to 24 minors. It has housed about 800 teens since 2008.
