COMMENTARY SOUTH BEND, Ind. –The venue was historic. The setting was immaculate. The jerseys were pristine throwbacks. The weather cooperated just enough to bring together two sectors from opposite corners of the sports universe. On Tuesday, the capacity crowd of 76,162 passionate spectators at Notre Dame Stadium weren’t treated to the traditional ebbs and flows of a Fighting Irish game day. They were treated to something entirely different: an outdoor hockey game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins. And what a game it was. With Touchdown Jesus bearing witness, the two sides put on a spectacle worthy of such pomp and circumstance that most kids only dream of when skating on a local pond or backyard rink. The Blackhawks took an early lead and trailed for less than half of a period, however, it wasn’t enough to tackle the hungry Bruins. Sean Kuraly’s rebound putback with 9:41 remaining in the third capped off Boston’s comeback effort, as the … [Read more...] about 3 takeaways from the Bruins’ Winter Classic win over the Blackhawks

Detroit Free Press staff Published 6:02 AM EDT Nov 3, 2018 Free Press sports writers and columnists predict Sunday's game, an NFC North showdown between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis. Jeff Seidel Vikings 28, Lions 17: Hey, sit up straight. Show some respect. There’s no slouching while you read this prediction. Got that? All right. So let’s recap: Golden Tate is gone. Matt Patricia has joined the Posture Police. And all hope seems gone. Which means, this is exactly the type of game the Lions will win, right? Nah. Carlos Monarrez Vikings 31, Lions 20: The Vikings are the most balanced team in the division and have a potent offense behind Kirk Cousins, who is second in NFL passing yards and completes 70.7 percent of his passes, and top-notch receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. The Lions’ defense is going to need an amazing game just to give the Lions’ Golden Tate-less offense a fighting chance. Windsor: Matt Patricia's … [Read more...] about Lions vs. Vikings predictions: Who wins NFC North battle?
COMMENTARY Five takeaways from the Patriots’ 25-6 win, as Tom Brady continued his career-long mastery of Buffalo with a 29th triumph over the Bills … Take it and move on It was ugly and unimpressive at times, and even became a bit uneasy for Patriots fans as the team struggled to separate from the Bills until the early stages of the fourth quarter. But in the end the Patriots found a way to leave Buffalo with a victory – notching another win on the road, another win in the division, and another win in a streak that’s now up to five in a row. The Bills aren’t good. They’re now 2-6, but their two wins have come against teams that won playoff games this past winter (the Vikings and Titans), and they hung in against a Texans team that has played well for the better part of the past month. However, after trips to Jacksonville and Detroit ended in disaster, there were questions about the Patriots’ ability to play on the road that have now dissipated … [Read more...] about 5 takeaways from the Patriots’ 25-6 win over the Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Devin McCourty returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown, and the New England Patriots’ defense smothered the Buffalo Bills’ anemic offense in a 25-6 win on Monday night. James White scored on a 1-yard run, and the Patriots relied more on Stephen Gostkowski’s leg than on Tom Brady’s arm for their fifth straight win, which improved their AFC East-leading record to 6-2. Brady finished 29 of 45 for 324 yards, but was held without a touchdown pass for the first time this season. Gostkowski hit four of five field-goal attempts, including two from 25 yards after New England drives stalled inside Buffalo’s 10. McCourty sealed the win with 5:54 remaining by intercepting Derek Anderson’s pass over the middle intended for LeSean McCoy and taking it to the end zone. Two plays before the pick, Bills tight end Jason Croom’s diving one-handed touchdown catch was negated following a video review. Replays clearly showed … [Read more...] about Patriots notch fifth-straight win with 25-6 victory over the Bills
Dana Gauruder Special to the Detroit Free Press Published 7:51 PM EDT Oct 28, 2018 The Detroit Red Wings have been waiting for the puck to bounce their way at Little Caesars Arena. They finally got the odd bounce they needed to collect their first home win of the season. Tyler Bertuzzi took advantage of a lucky break to score the go-ahead goal with 15:01 remaining and the Wings went on to defeat the Dallas Stars, 4-2, on Sunday. The Wings, now 2-7-2, had scored a single goal in each of their previous two home games. They were headed in that direction again until the puck unexpectedly headed toward Bertuzzi's stick. Kings goalie Ben Bishop left the net to play the puck after a Niklas Kronwall dump-in. The puck deflected off the boards and back toward the front of the net, where Bertuzzi beat the retreating defensemen and banged it into the empty net. Jonathan Ericsson scored midway through the period with a shot from the point that tumbled over Bishop's right shoulder. Justin … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings get first home win of season
