Russian President Vladimir Putin has landed in Saudi Arabia on a trip to the kingdom.Putin’s plane landed just after 1:30 p.m. Monday in Riyadh. An honor guard of Saudi soldiers greeted Putin as he came down the stairs of his plane.Putin’s visit comes after King Salman traveled to Moscow on a state visit in October 2017. It also comes as the kingdom tries to strike a closer relationship with Russia, especially as it has joined OPEC in limiting its oil production to help boost global energy prices.Russia along with Iran meanwhile has aided Syrian President Bashar Assad, whom the kingdom long opposed in his country’s civil war. Pakistan’s prime minister says that his country is opposed to any war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, as he tries to mediate skyrocketing tensions between the U.S.-allied kingdom and its regional archrival.Imran Khan is meeting with Iranian leaders in Tehran Sunday, before traveling to Saudi Arabia later in the week.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned during a joint press conference that Iran would respond to any threats, saying it was a “big mistake” to think it wouldn’t do so.His remarks come days after a mysterious attack on an Iranian oil tanker in the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia. The US shouldn’t take military action against Iran
It’s fine to help Saudi Arabia with its missile defense system, certainly, but the president has also rattled the proverbial saber, saying that the United States is “locked and loaded” when it comes to Iran. And he seemed to leave it up to the Saudi kingdom to determine the US response, tweeting that he was waiting to hear from the Saudis regarding “under what terms we would proceed” after the refinery attack. Since then, we have witnessed the bizarre instance of the Saudi foreign minister acting as though he were a high US government official by warning that “there comes a point when even America’s patience runs out — and Iran must be aware of that.” All this is profoundly wrong-headed. UNICEF frets over underage maids in Vietnam
Shelley Casey, the UNICEF representative in Vietnam, told government officials and experts at a consultation workshop held on Monday to discuss amendments to the Labor Code that several countries around the world have classified this job as dangerous work for minors. In the Philippines and Malaysia, for instance, hiring children under 15 for housework is illegal, she pointed out. "Juvenile workers are vulnerable to abuse. Therefore, if they are allowed to work, the authorities need to devise some safety measures." The proposed amendments do not make hiring juveniles for housework illegal, only subjecting domestic workers to abuse, violent treatment, sexual harassment, and forced labor. They also require employers to sign a contract with domestic workers and not confiscate their personal documents.
