Gordon Brown today called for energy firms to be re-nationalised as a “last resort” over soaring bills until “the crisis is over”. The former Prime Minister said the energy price cap should be frozen - which would axe plans for it to go up from £1,971 now to around £3,600 in October and over £4,200 in January. Energy supplies’ ‘actual costs’ should be assessed, social tariffs and standing charges made fairer, and separate company agreements negotiated to keep prices down, he said, while businesses should cut consumption.
