Healthcare service stays muted for deaf people

· October 10, 2019 ·

A mother communicates with her deaf son as she takes him to a hospital in Hanoi for a health check. Photo by VnExpress/Duc Thanh. After waiting in line for hours to meet a gynaecologist at a hospital in Hanoi, two hearing- and speech-impaired women finally met the doctor. The three used hand signs to try and communicate with each other. The meeting ended within a minute since the doctor and patients could not understand each other and there was no interpreter around. "Hearing and speech-impaired people usually face a great disadvantage when getting health checks at hospitals," Lan Anh, one of the patients, later told VnExpress through an interpreter. "The doctor asked us about our reproductive health, and we could not provide any information because we don’t have any knowledge in that field. When the doctor gives us a prescription, we don’t understand our condition, how to take the medicine, or how the treatment will go." Deaf people have the same need for medical … [Read more...] about Healthcare service stays muted for deaf people

Swedish girl yearns to find her Vietnamese mother

· October 6, 2019 ·

Alma became the second adopted child of Mr. and Mrs. Mansson, and on one winter day in 1997 she was taken to Falkenberg, a town on the west coast of Sweden.  Alma Mansson, birth name Nguyen Thi Thuy. Photo courtesy of Alma. Despite being deeply loved by the Mansson family and enjoying living conditions everyone arguably aspires to, Alma also realized she looked different from those around her with her darker skin and black hair. Her adoptive parents understood her feelings and never shied away from talking about her origins.  They showed her adoption papers and other documents and encouraged her to return to Vietnam to find her roots.  "Deep down in my heart, I have always wanted to find my biological parents no matter how the truth turns out," the 22-year-old told VnExpress. In October last year she had the opportunity to return to Vietnam for the first time on a two-week cultural exchange program at her university, and took advantage of that short trip to look for … [Read more...] about Swedish girl yearns to find her Vietnamese mother

Wisconsin man retraces father’s WWII footsteps in Europe

· October 4, 2019 ·

JANESVILLE, Wis. — Dave Sheen wore out his father's World War II field jacket during junior high. But like so many in the baby boomer generation, Dave seldom heard his father, Merle, talk about the war. He remembers Merle saying that wars don't solve anything. They just kill people. And he remembers hearing his father tell his mother that he wanted to return to France, Belgium and the Netherlands someday to see the countries "when they weren't all torn up." Merle never got the chance. The Janesville insurance adjuster died in 1976, before Dave ever asked him about his wartime experiences. But Dave was lucky. His father, who earned the Silver and Bronze stars and Purple Heart, survived some of Europe's most horrific fighting, and the Army kept a paper trail of his push into Germany with the famed 30th Infantry Division, The Janesville Gazette reported. Known as Old Hickory, the 30th Division was regarded as the cream of the crop among U.S. fighting units. The 30th fought at … [Read more...] about Wisconsin man retraces father’s WWII footsteps in Europe
