Up to 4.7 million visits to hospital accident and emergency units in the past year may have been due to people being unable to see their GP, an official study suggests. Research by health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found almost one in five A&E patients surveyed had resorted to emergency departments because they couldn’t get advice or treatment elsewhere. Of those, the research found, around one third (35 per cent) said there were no appointments available and 30 per cent said they were not able to get through to or access the service. Not all of those who sought help before going to A&E tried their GP, with slightly more opting to phone the NHS ’s 111 line. But those who did seek help were almost twice as likely to say they had not managed to see, speak to or chat online with a health worker as those who rang 111. The CQC’s findings were based on interviews with 422 patients just before Christmas at two A&Es in East London – King George … [Read more...] about Patients made 4.7million trips to A&E because they couldn’t get advice or treatment from their GP, UK’s health watchdog suggests

Inside abandoned mental asylum with doctors’ paper work on patients left strewn around
This terrifying abandoned mental health hospital was first opened in 1916 and closed in 2016 leaving it a vacant paradise for looters and vandals. Ridge Lea Asylum in Lancaster had a demolition request refused, despite Star Planning and Development describing how the building had been a vicious target of unlawful breaking, looting and vandalism. Now the ' Urbexcr ' group, who travel all across the UK venturing into interesting abandoned buildings, bravely went into the hospital to see what was left behind. The courageous pair claimed the place was "absolutely wrecked" as they snapped photos of broken windows and rotting walls. Photos from inside the huge abandoned asylum showed the aftermath of years of decay and vandalism – with rooms that look as if they'd been set on fire and walls stripped of copper wire. One of the explorers said: "Even though the place was absolutely destroyed it was still an interesting explore. There was so much natural decay and lots of history … [Read more...] about Inside abandoned mental asylum with doctors’ paper work on patients left strewn around

Nation cannot risk seniors by relaxing COVID policy
Higher booster shot coverage for the elderly, better management of new cases and medical resources, more efficient and accessible testing, and home treatment for COVID-19 are some essential prerequisites for China to adjust its existing policy to control COVID, a senior infectious disease expert said. Without these preconditions, dynamic clearance remains the most optimal and responsible strategy for China as the country cannot risk the lives of its senior population by relaxing its anti-epidemic measures prematurely, said Wang Guiqiang, head of the infectious disease department at Peking University First Hospital. The Chinese mainland reported 226 locally-transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases on Saturday, of which 166 were in Shanghai and 33 were in Beijing, according to the National Health Commission's report on Sunday. In a public seminar on Saturday, Wang, also a member of the national experts' team on treating COVID-19 cases, said the recent COVID-19 outbreaks in Hong Kong … [Read more...] about Nation cannot risk seniors by relaxing COVID policy

Jeremy Hunt last night furiously denied claims by Tory colleagues that he is a ' lockdown fanatic' who supported the draconion Chinese policy of 'zero Covid'. One Tory MP claimed to The Mail on Sunday that the former Health Secretary – who is planning a leadership bid if Boris Johnson is ousted – had backed an extreme Chinese-style lockdown during the pandemic, including the forced use of isolation hotels for people who tested positive. But last night a source close to Mr Hunt, who also served as Foreign Secretary , said his words had been 'twisted' by his critics in the party. The Tory MP who made the claims said that Mr Hunt, whose wife is Chinese, had spoken approvingly of Beijing's approach during the first wave of the pandemic in summer 2020.
