Depending on whom you ask, e-scooters are either the coolest thing to come along in years or another nuisance/fad that threatens to clog our sidewalks and streets.Users of dockless e-scooters (electric scooters) can rent them via smartphones and drop them off wherever when they’re done. E-scooters are not allowed in Fort Collins as city leaders study the issue. The scooters are controversial in Denver and are under discussion here in Colorado Springs.Do they belong on streets or on sidewalks? Sidewalks in and around our downtown are for pedestrians only, so should that law be changed? Should they be allowed on our paved trails where e-bikes are allowed?Proponents argue that e-scooters are an affordable (and fun) form of transportation for short trips. They say they take vehicles off streets and appeal to tourists and millennials. Opponents point to the resulting mess in cities such as San Francisco and Austin, Texas, where companies dumped scooters by the hundreds before … [Read more...] about Trail Talk: Scootin’ along stirs controversy across country

The reasons: Just about any destination could qualify as budget, depending on one's tolerance for sleeping outdoors and eating straight from a can of beans, and travel authorities take great pains to avoid … [Read more...] about Six US budget vacation destinations offer bounty for the frugal
Quarry still desired spot, but ‘world-class’ bike park in Colorado Springs not imminent
Months after Colorado Springs received a $1 million pledge to develop a “world-class” bike park, officials and cycling advocates continue to eye the Pikeview Quarry as a dream location. But the prospect remains foggy, as a concrete company continues operations there. The Colorado Mined Reclamation Board in May denied Transit Mix’s plan to open a quarry in the southern foothills near Hitch Rack Ranch. Weeks before that vote, Transit Mix announced that if the quarry were approved, it would transfer Pikeview to the city at a discount — paving the way potentially for the downhill, track-covered playground that parks planners envisioned at the site as early as two years ago. With clearance to build the new mine, the company had said, it would leave the mountainside scar in northwest Colorado Springs and finish reclamation almost 20 years ahead of schedule. In response, the El Pomar Foundation, a local nonprofit that opposed the Hitch Rack Ranch plan, offered the city … [Read more...] about Quarry still desired spot, but ‘world-class’ bike park in Colorado Springs not imminent

The Balancing Act of Arches
Sections Skip to content Skip to site index Footsteps Decades ago, the pioneering writer Edward Abbey immortalized then-empty Arches National Park. Can it survive the modern influx of visitors? The night sky in Arches National Park, immortalized by Edward Abbey in his book “Desert Solitaire.” Credit Beth Coller for The New York Times Supported by ByJohn O’Connor July 2, 2018 As always, I arrived too late. The time to be here, the real sweet spot? I missed it. Try a good half-century ago, I was told by locals, before the place was discovered by the outside world, back when it was still Arches National Monument and not yet a designated park, just a dusty backwater in southeast Utah inhabited by a few old cowboys, desert castaways, Latter-Day seekers, and a handful of tourists who’d perhaps made a wrong turn somewhere. The roads — a pure, unpaved hell — tended to discourage folks. Fifty, maybe 60, people a day … [Read more...] about The Balancing Act of Arches
