Brighton owner’s horse costs mystery punter £725,000 after Cheltenham flop
Brighton owner Tony Bloom saw his star horse finish third at Cheltenham on Saturday after one mystery punter placed a staggering £725,000 bet on the nine-year-old. Champion Chase hero Energumene went off as a heavily backed favourite in the rearranged Clarence House Chase. That resulted in one punter putting £350,000 at 4-7 and £375,000 at 8-15. The Racing Post states that the mystery punter is rumoured to be Bloom himself. Star Sports stated on social media that they stood to lose £400,000 if Energumene had won the six-runner race. However, the Brighton-based bookie prevailed as the Bloom-owned horse finished third behind 14/1 winner Editeur Du Gite and Edwardstone in second. Ronan McNally has been served what's believed to be a record 12-year ban from Irish horse racing after being found guilty of 'multiple integrity breaches'. On top of his disqualification from Irish racing, McNally has been fined £44,000 (€50,000) and ordered to repay around £11,800 (€13,400) in winnings. The County Armagh trainer was determined to have been 'at least partially in breach' of 10 of 11 alleged rule violations when the verdict was confirmed in December 2022. A devastated mum was diagnosed with cancer after her doctor mansplained and "bet his mortgage" that she was too young to have the disease. Beth Doherty, 28, could potentially be left infertile after her symptoms were dismissed for six months. The mum spent less than five minutes with her male GP during which time he insisted that her symptoms were normal "birth complications". She is now in remission from Stage Four Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system and white blood cells. Beth underwent 12 gruelling rounds of chemotherapy which left her almost suffering from a collapsed spine. The performing arts lecturer, from the West Midlands, started experiencing extreme back pain four months after giving birth to her daughter, now aged two, in 2020. 100,000 nurses and patients sign letter to Rishi Sunak calling for NHS wage rise
Some 100,000 members of the public, nursing staff and patients have signed a letter urging the Prime Minister to raise nurses’ wages that was delivered to Downing Street this morning. The Royal College of Nursing, who organised the letter (which is printed in full at the end of this article), is warning Rishi Sunak on his 100th day in office that the NHS is “deteriorating rapidly” on his watch. In a major escalation, nurses are planning to walk out next Monday and Tuesday at a bigger number of hospitals than previous action. The NHS will see strikes take place everyday next week except for Wednesday with ambulance workers, nurses, physiotherapists and midwives in Wales to walk out.
