The project has been on hold since December 2018, when a U.S. appeals court threw out a key Forest Service permit allowing Dominion Energy to construct the planned 600-mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline beneath portions of the Appalachian Trail. In a ruling that quoted The Lorax, Judge Stephanie Thacker concluded that the Forest Service had "abdicated its responsibility" by ignoring key safety and environmental issues in its review. She also said that, as a unit of the National Park Service, construction projects crossing the Appalachian Trail corridor are subject to Congressional approval. Attorneys for 12 young Alaskans who sued over state climate change policy are expected to argue their case before Alaska Supreme Court justices on Wednesday.The lawsuit says state policy that promotes fossil fuels violates the constitutional right of young Alaskans to a safe climate.The lawsuit says human-caused climate change will be catastrophic unless atmospheric carbon dioxide declines.Among the damages it lists are increasing temperatures, changing rain and snow patterns, rising seas, storm-surge flooding, thawing permafrost, coast erosion and increased wildfires. Israel’s Supreme Court has upheld an appeal against releasing a former educator accused of sexually abusing her students in Australia to house arrest while she fights extradition proceedings.Australia wants Malka Leifer extradited to face 74 charges of abusing students while she was principal at a Jewish religious school in Melbourne. Dutch court convicts asylum-seeker in station terror attack
A Dutch court has convicted an Afghan asylum-seeker and sentenced him to nearly 27 years imprisonment for stabbing two American tourists in a terror attack at Amsterdam’s main railway station.The 20-year-old man, identified by Dutch authorities as Jawed S, was shot by police shortly after he stabbed two 38-year-old American men at Amsterdam Central station on Aug. 31 last year.Both victims survived but one was left partially paralyzed by the attack.Amsterdam District Court convicted Jawed S. Monday of attempted murder with a terrorist motive and sentenced him to the maximum possible 26 years and eight months.
