Associated Press Published 12:57 p.m. UTC Aug 17, 2018 Greensboro, N.C. — Brandt Snedeker predicted low scores at the Wyndham Championship — but not this low. Snedeker shot an 11-under 59 on Thursday, falling one shot shy of matching the PGA Tour record. He made a 20-foot putt on his final hole to become the 10th player in tour history to break 60. Jim Furyk set the record with a 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship in 2016. “I better be smiling,” Snedeker said. “I don’t do this every day.” WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP SCORES This is the third consecutive year the PGA Tour has had a sub-60 round. Brandt Snedeker shoots 59; 10th player on PGA Tour to break 60
Associated Press Published 7:02 p.m. UTC Aug 16, 2018 Greensboro, N.C. – Brandt Snedeker predicted low scores at the Wyndham Championship – but not this low. Snedeker is the first to shoot 59 since Adam Hadwin in the third round of the 2017 Careerbuilder Challenge. Snedeker – who said a day earlier that the tournament would turn into a “birdie-fest” – began his round at par-70 Sedgefield Country Club with a bogey at No. 10, and he took off from there. Bruce Lietzke, fun-loving PGA Tour winner, dies at 67
Updated 4:36 pm PDT, Saturday, July 28, 2018 ATHENS, Texas (AP) — Bruce Lietzke, the fun-loving, draw-hitting PGA Tour winner whose practice regime — or lack of one — spawned an often-told spoiled banana story, died Saturday of brain cancer. He was 67. Lietzke's family said he died at his Athens ranch. "Our PGA Tour family lost a treasured member with the death of Bruce Lietzke," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. "He touched on parts of five decades as a player, competed in 700 tournaments as a member of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions, and recorded a total of 20 victories. "But to celebrate Bruce Lietzke's life properly, we offer praise to the great family man and the cherished friend to many." With family, fishing and a large muscle car collection to tend to, the 13-time PGA Tour winner had little time or desire to tinker with a trusted swing that didn't need tinkering — as the banana story hilariously illustrates. It … [Read more...] about Bruce Lietzke, fun-loving PGA Tour winner, dies at 67
Tiger Woods at Detroit’s PGA Tour event in ’19? Don’t hold your breath
Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 2:35 p.m. UTC Jul 27, 2018 If you’re a golf fan, you had to be excited Sunday because Tiger Woods was on the cusp of winning the British Open at Carnoustie and his first major championship in 10 years. Of course, it didn’t happen. He briefly held the lead after his 10th hole, then coughed it up with mistakes on the 11th and 12th holes and tied for sixth place. I’ve always loved watching Tiger play in person and on television. So I was really disappointed that he couldn’t find that old magic he seemed conjure with regular ease a decade ago. I think most golf fans were probably disappointed at the near miss of our generation’s greatest player. But if you’re a golf fan in Michigan, prepare yourself for another potential disappointment. Tiger probably won’t play in the PGA Tour’s inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic next year at Detroit Golf Club. I bring this up because I think it’s been … [Read more...] about Tiger Woods at Detroit’s PGA Tour event in ’19? Don’t hold your breath
Merritt wins rain-delayed Barbasol, saves PGA Tour card
By Gary B. Graves Associated Press Published 9:46 p.m. UTC Jul 23, 2018 Nicholasville, Ky. — Troy Merritt briefly wondered about trying another line of work as time passed following his initial PGA Tour victory more than three years ago. He can now look forward to two more years as a professional and participation in next month’s PGA Championship after clutch putting earned him his second trophy. Merritt shot a 5-under 67 on Monday to win the rain-delayed Barbasol Championship by one stroke. He led or shared the lead after each round. This was his second career PGA Tour victory and came with a spot in the PGA Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis. A pretty nice payoff for renewed dedication that helped him keep his tour card after struggling to follow up his 2015 Quicken Loans National victory. “You always ask yourself, is this the time to move on?” said Merritt, who earned $630,000 and 300 FedEx Cup points with the victory. He also is exempt through the … [Read more...] about Merritt wins rain-delayed Barbasol, saves PGA Tour card
