What happened to British transfer record stars as Chelsea fans pray flop curse ends

February 1, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Chelsea fans are hoping that the curse of British record transfers will end following the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica . The Argentine midfielder joined the Blues on Deadline Day following a month-long transfer saga, arriving at Stamford Bridge for a British record fee of just over £105million. Fresh from winning the World Cup, Fernandez will head to England after Chelsea agreed to pay his release clause across several instalments. However, the large fee is a cause of concern for supporters due to Chelsea's poor record with previous big money signings and the history of past British record transfers. As the clock ticked down on deadline day it appeared a deal might not be reached but a statement from Benfica confirmed that it had been agreed shortly before 2300 GMT on Tuesday. It said Chelsea would pay the contract release fee for the 22-year-old, who has signed an eight-and-a-half year deal with the London club. Arsenal ace Nuno Tavares sets up brutally unlucky own goal with mazy run for loan club

February 1, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares set-up a goal for loan club Olympique Marseille though the defender was very unfortunate. Portuguese defender Tavares was sent on loan to Marseille at the start of the season after falling behind Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order. He had a chequered start to life at the Emirates with many glimpses of potential being over-shadowed by some costly mistakes and poor performances, particular his nightmare display against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup last season. However, he appears to be enjoying his time with Ligue 1 giants Marseille, as was demonstrated in his wonderful 'assist' against Nantes. Tavares then sharply turned away and sprinted through the heart of the Nantes midfield on his way to goal. River Plate are set to receive more than their record transfer fee for Chelsea -bound Enzo Fernandez, according to reports. Fernandez, 22, only left his native Argentina last summer to join Portuguese side Benfica. River pocketed just €10million (£8.8m) up front, but wisely included a sell-on clause believed to be 25%. Six months on that has paid off and some after Chelsea paid a British record transfer fee of €120m (£107m) to bring him to Stamford Bridge on an eight-and-a-half year contract. As well as €30m (£26.5m), they'll get bonuses which take their sum past the €40m (£35m) mark. Chelsea have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for a British record transfer fee of €121million (£107m). Fernandez, who had been on the west London club's wishlist throughout January, joined the Blues just before the January window slammed shut. Benfica confirmed the move in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday (February 1) morning. Chelsea, meanwhile, have changed their Twitter bio to an Argentina flag and a trophy in anticipation of the World Cup winner's arrival. He's signed an eight-and-a-half year contract and becomes their seventh arrival of a busy and expensive month that began with French defender Benoit Badiashile moving to Stamford Bridge from Monaco for £35million. Messi scores as PSG moves 5 points clear but Mbappe injured

PARIS — World Cup winner Lionel Messi scored and Kylian Mbappé missed a twice-taken penalty before getting injured as Paris Saint-Germain won 3-1 at Montpellier to move five points clear at the top of the French league on Wednesday. Mbappé went down clutching his leg just under the right knee and limped off in the 21st minute — having earlier missed a twice-taken penalty and blazed the rebound over an open goal on his second effort. It was unclear exactly what his injury was. Television cameras also caught him rubbing the back of his left thigh as he walked to the dressing room. PSG coach Christophe Galtier told broadcaster Canal Plus "he took a blow behind the knee," and then said at his news conference the injury does not appear serious. "Is it a bruise? We don't know yet. It doesn't look very serious," Galtier said. "We're not too worried." The Argentina star Messi tucked home PSG's second goal with a typically neat finish in the 72nd after being set up by Fabián Ruiz, who … [Read more...] about Messi scores as PSG moves 5 points clear but Mbappe injured

Nine players who bailed on the Premier League young but came back to be superstars

February 1, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

In sport, there's nothing quite like a comeback story. An individual getting written off only to gradually claw their back to the top is the stuff of corny Hollywood blockbusters, but it happens more often that you might think in football. Pedro Porro hasn't exactly 'clawed his way back to the top' yet (sorry Tottenham fans), but his big-money move back to the Premier League after being binned off by Manchester City last year has '#narrative' written all over it - and it got us thinking. How many other players have quit the Prem only to return as superstars? A fair few it turns out! Here's nine of the best.
