Vaccination. File photo MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday announced that elderly and health frontliners may now avail their second booster shot against COVID-19. This came following the recommendation of the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC) and after the Food and Drug Administration earlier granted emergency use authorization (EUA) on the administration of the second COVID-19 vaccine booster to senior citizens and frontline healthcare workers aged 18 and above. “The second booster for our health workers and senior citizens will enhance protection given by the first booster and the primary series against all variants, including the recent Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1. Against whatever variant there is out there, the second booster supports the 4-Door strategy,” said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire in a statement. “Everyone eligible can get the second booster jab done at the LGU vaccination sites nearest you. Public-private partnership against COVID-19
Over the last 25 months, a public-private partnership has quietly been working behind the scenes with the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) in the battle against COVID-19. Known as Task Force T3 (for Test, Trace, Treat), our work covered a wide range of responses for COVID management and involved many companies and volunteer executive teams working hand in hand with government officials and staff from the IATF, partner agencies, and local governments. From our perspective, this public-private partnership has been a successful model for managing national crisis. Though it’s been a roller coaster of a ride over these last two years, we’ve been able to see COVID case rates drop significantly, low mortality rates, and hospital utilization rates decline. I’d like to briefly outline this journey and try to draw some lessons from this partnership. In April 2020, the government invited the private sector into a partnership to expand RT-PCR … [Read more...] about Public-private partnership against COVID-19

Germany OKs more COVID-19 vaccine spending for this fall
BERLIN (AP) — Germany plans to spend another 830 million euros ($872 million) to buy new coronavirus vaccines that will allow the country to deal with a series of possible variants this fall, the health minister said Wednesday. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said that the government, via the European Union, already has ordered enough of the existing vaccines and of one that has been developed by Germany’s BioNTech to counter the omicron variant. He said the new funding is earmarked for a vaccine being developed by Moderna to tackle both omicron and other variants. “We are betting on a broad portfolio of vaccines; we must be prepared for all eventualities,” Lauterbach said. “We don't know what variants will confront us in the fall.” “One lesson from the pandemic is that we never again want to have too little vaccine,” he added, alluding to the sluggish start early last year of the EU's and Germany's COVID-19 vaccination campaign. “We want to be able to offer all those who need … [Read more...] about Germany OKs more COVID-19 vaccine spending for this fall

U.S. FDA clears Pfizer’s Covid booster shot for young
Pfizer/BioNTech’s new pediatric COVID-19 vaccine vials are seen in this undated handout photo. Pfizer/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the use of a booster shot of Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11, the regulator said on Tuesday. The authorization makes everyone in the United States aged five and above eligible for booster doses of the vaccine, although the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still needs to sign off on the shots. “While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the Omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized,” FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said in a statement. Califf said the authorization would help provide continued protection against COVID-19 in that age group. Data has shown that vaccine effectiveness starts to wane over time. The U.S. government has been urging … [Read more...] about U.S. FDA clears Pfizer’s Covid booster shot for young
