Scott Drew, Baylor roll UC-Santa Barbara 74-56 in NCAA Tournament opener thanks to dominant second half
Scott Drew isn’t in the same realm as Coach K, Jim Boeheim or Roy Williams, coaching legends all. But it appears he’s on his way. His third-seeded Bears rolled to a 74-56 win over No. 14 UC-Santa Barbara on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Ball Arena. But Drew, whose younger brother Bryce is the Grand Canyon coach and father, Homer, the longtime coach at Valparaiso, isn’t one for reflecting during the tournament. He believes his Bears, who won the program’s first national title two years ago, are primed for another deep run. “There’s really no reflecting, especially in the middle of this tournament, because once you start to reflect, you’re done,” Scott Drew said. “One thing that did hit home to me was when it was pointed out that it’s the 25th anniversary of my brother’s (famous March Madness) shot. I thought about it, that none of our guys were born at that point. I felt old at that point, but that’s the only reflecting I’ve done here.” Scott Drew was an … [Read more...] about Scott Drew, Baylor roll UC-Santa Barbara 74-56 in NCAA Tournament opener thanks to dominant second half

How Javier Assad’s offseason velocity program and WBC performance has him in contention for Chicago Cubs roster spot
Adbert Alzolay’s emoji game got a workout this past week. Alzolay tuned in for both of Chicago Cubs teammate Javier Assad’s stellar relief appearances for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. And as Assad racked up the scoreless innings on the international stage, Alzolay made sure to give his performances a shout out on Twitter, punctuated with the appropriate emoji. “I mean, he’s just electric,” Alzolay told the Tribune. “Seeing him growing up in the minors and now seeing him on the biggest stage right now doing what he’s doing against the hitters and the teams he’s been doing it against tells you that this guy is already ready for the playoffs.” Like Alzolay, most of Justin Steele’s career has overlapped with Assad’s at the minor- and major-league levels. “That’s Assad, baby,” Steele said. “That’s just how he is. He’s really good.” Assad’s success in the WBC built off his Cactus League work. In six appearances between the two, Assad has recorded 9⅔ scoreless … [Read more...] about How Javier Assad’s offseason velocity program and WBC performance has him in contention for Chicago Cubs roster spot

Paralympian Claire Cashmore opens up on disability as she explains turning point
If there’s one person who knows about the unlimited power of sport, then it’s Paralympian Claire Cashmore. With five Games under her belt and multiple medals - including a gold and silver in swimming at Rio and a bronze in the Paratriathlon in Tokyo - she is who she is today because of her sport. Born without a left forearm, the 34-year-old admits she was incredibly self-conscious about her disability growing up and in her teenage years. She’d do all she could to hide her arm and grew to hate the fact that she was different. At that time there was no one like her to look up to and no one visible who was also living life with a disability. On a day like today - International Women’s Day - it’s a reminder of just how important role models are for the younger generation who might be doubting if sport is for them. “I look back at when I was young and my role models were able-bodied men,” Cashmore told Mirror Sport. “You’re like, ‘that’s so irrelevant’. “But that’s all … [Read more...] about Paralympian Claire Cashmore opens up on disability as she explains turning point
