New “severe” label on Denver’s air quality means higher gas prices, more stringent emissions standards
After years of failing to improve air quality, the Denver region is on the verge of receiving another downgrade by the Environmental Protection Agency that would result in higher gas prices and require more businesses to apply for emissions permits under the federal Clean Air Act. The move would force refineries to produce a special blend of gasoline for drivers in the nine-county northern Front Range during the summer months, which the association that represents the state’s gas sellers estimates would increase prices by 40 to 50 cents per gallon by next year. Michael Ogletree, director of Colorado’s Air Pollution Control Division, estimated Tuesday that 470 businesses could be required to apply for Title V air permits because the threshold for acceptable ozone-creating emissions would drop. However, there are rules that allow businesses to take steps that qualify for exceptions, so the number of newly regulated businesses could be between 100 to 300, he said. The EPA is … [Read more...] about New “severe” label on Denver’s air quality means higher gas prices, more stringent emissions standards
Russia considers leaving the WHO and World Trade Organisation as Putin continues to isolate his nation from the West
Russia may sever ties with prominent global bodies as Vladimir Putin continues to isolate his nation from the West following the invasion of Ukraine . Moscow's Foreign Ministry yesterday sent a list of international organisations to parliament, with orders to review it and break 'obligations [or] treaties which do not bring benefit, but direct damage to our country,' deputy speaker Pyotr Tolstoy said. The World Health Organisation and World Trade Organisation are among names on the list, Russian news agencies reported. It comes after Western countries cut off large parts of the Russian economy from the global trade via sanctions, with hundreds of western businesses pulling out of the country to protest the war. Russia's foreign ministry has ordered parliament to cut ties with any global body deemed to be 'harming' the country, as Putin isolates himself from the West (file image) WHO member states have already tried to force the health body - which typically … [Read more...] about Russia considers leaving the WHO and World Trade Organisation as Putin continues to isolate his nation from the West

Major change to smoking laws set to be introduced in ‘radical’ plan to promote vaping and e-cigarettes
A MAJOR change to smoking laws could be introduced in a "radical" plan to promote vaping and e-cigarettes. Brits will be encouraged to quit the bad habit as Health Secretary Sajid Javid awaits a damning report on the tobacco industry, it's been reported. An independent review, commissioned by the Health Secretary, is expected to be published in the coming weeks. It's set to suggest that the legal age to buy cigarettes should be increased to 21 in Britain. New taxes will also be slapped on tobacco company profits in a bid to cut the habit by 2030, reports The Telegraph . (CDC/Handout via REUTERS) LONDON — The World Health Organization is working on further guidance for countries on how to mitigate the spread of monkeypox, amid concerns that cases could spike further in the summer months, a senior adviser for the UN agency told Reuters. The WHO’s working theory based on the cases identified so far is that the outbreak is being driven by sexual contact, said David Heymann, chair of the WHO’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Infectious Hazards with Pandemic and Epidemic Potential. He led a meeting on the outbreak on Friday. Monkeypox is an infectious disease that is usually mild and is endemic in parts of west and central Africa. It is spread by close contact, which means it can be relatively easily contained through such measures as self-isolation and … [Read more...] about WHO working on more monkeypox guidance as cases rise
