Ravens roundtable: Breaking down the toughest tests, best games and more in the 2022 schedule
The Ravens haven’t played a game since early January, haven’t won a game since late November and haven’t beaten a 2021 playoff team since mid-September. But with the release of the NFL’s 2022 schedule Thursday — and the expected return of a litany of injured starters — hope springs eternal in Baltimore. The Ravens, looking to return to the postseason after an 8-9 season, will open their slate with a four-game stretch against AFC East opponents and finish it with an AFC North-heavy itinerary. In between, they’ll face Super Bowl contenders and perennial also-rans. They’ll play games on Sunday, Monday, Thursday and maybe even Saturday. They’ll take on a division where Ben Roethlisberger and Baker Mayfield are no longer Lamar Jackson’s toughest competition at quarterback. Four months from the Ravens’ season opener, 2022 predictions are almost entirely speculative. But someone’s got to make them. Here’s how Baltimore Sun reporters Childs Walker and Jonas Shaffer and editor C.J. Doon … [Read more...] about Ravens roundtable: Breaking down the toughest tests, best games and more in the 2022 schedule
Dolphins, Buccaneers to hold joint practices ahead of preseason game in Tampa
Before the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kick off their preseason schedule on Aug. 13, the two teams will hold joint practices in Tampa that week, according to a league source. Joint practice sessions allow teams to work against an opponent during training camp after weeks of being restricted to intra-squad practice reps. Last season, the Dolphins held joint practices against the Bears ahead of their preseason opener in Chicago and then the following week at home against the Atlanta Falcons. Miami’s other two 2022 preseason games are both at Hard Rock Stadium in the Saturdays that follow, against the Las Vegas Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles. Since the NFL expanded its regular-season schedule from 16 games to 17, it has also removed a preseason game off the slate — from four to three. The Dolphins lost to the Buccaneers in Tampa last October in a 45-17 rout in which quarterback Tom Brady threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns. Brady has since been linked to … [Read more...] about Dolphins, Buccaneers to hold joint practices ahead of preseason game in Tampa
Denver East hires Carl Mattei as its girls basketball coach
Carl Mattei’s quest for 400 career wins is back on again — at Denver East. The longtime Regis Jesuit girls basketball coach has accepted the vacant Angels girls basketball head coaching position, Mattei told The Post by phone Monday. Until this past August, the 56-year-old Mattei had spent 17 seasons coaching girls basketball at Regis Jesuit, where he built the Raiders into one of the top programs in the state and one that, thanks to 44 Division I players, became recognized nationally as well. “I was very honored when Principal (Terita) Walker talked to me and she had the same vision that I have in excellence in everything that we do,” Mattei said. “That was something that I modeled my program on at Regis, but the new administration there decided to go in a different direction of excellence. So now I’m very excited to get back in the game and work with the administration at East.” Mattei was dismissed by Regis last August after serving as that program’s first and only … [Read more...] about Denver East hires Carl Mattei as its girls basketball coach

Dolphins signing former Pro Bowl pass rusher Melvin Ingram
The Miami Dolphins aren’t done adding talent to the roster this offseason, and they just landed a three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher. Melving Ingram is signing with the Dolphins, according to a league source on Sunday. Ingram, who can play both defensive end and outside linebacker and visited Miami in April, has made his mark in the NFL over nine seasons with the Chargers but found a resurgence late last season with the Chiefs. At 33 years old, Ingram has 55 career sacks between regular season and postseason play since entering the league as a first-round pick in the 2012 draft. After consecutive Pro Bowl campaigns from 2017 to 2019, Ingram suffered multiple knee injuries in 2020 that cut his final year with the Chargers short and caused him to miss more than half the season. He signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of training camp in 2021, and the Steelers then traded him at the deadline to the Chiefs. In the second half of the 2021 season in Kansas … [Read more...] about Dolphins signing former Pro Bowl pass rusher Melvin Ingram

The Chicago Bears begin OTAs today. Here’s a position-by-position breakdown of their roster.
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles spent the last two months reconstructing the roster he inherited from predecessor Ryan Pace. Poles has been forthright in acknowledging he is not going to fix a 2021 team that went 6-11 in one year. At some positions, he has made upgrades. At others, Poles has added temporary fillers until he has more resources to find the right players. The Bears will get a better sense for what they have over the next month as they start organized team activities Monday at Halas Hall. Most players already became acquainted with new coach Matt Eberflus during voluntary minicamp in mid-April or rookie minicamp May 7-9. Over the next five weeks, they will diver deeper into their work with three OTAs sessions of three days apiece and then mandatory minicamp June 14-16. Here’s a look at the roster the Bears will field during those practices. * Indicates 2022 draft pick Quarterbacks (3 on roster) Key returners: Justin Fields Notable … [Read more...] about The Chicago Bears begin OTAs today. Kickin’ It with Kiz: Which Broncos foe would be sweetest to beat: Drew Lock, Josh McDaniels or Patrick Mahomes?
That’s a brutal schedule for what should’ve been an easy last-place slate for the Broncos. It’s bad luck that the NFC division in the rotation this year is the West, by far the best in that conference. Russell Wilson is gonna have to return to form for Denver to make the playoffs. — Scott, head > heart Kiz: Reading the menu of Broncos games makes me salivate with sweet anticipation. There figure to be so many showdowns against guys we love to hate. Drew Lock in Seattle. Josh McDaniels with the Raiders. Mahomes and the Chiefs. Let me ask: Which of those guys would you enjoy beating most? (Make mine Mahomes.) And which one would give Broncos Country the most pain in defeat? (If Lock beats Wilson in the season-opener, all places of work in Colorado might be forced to shut down for a day of mourning.) I’d love to go to Kansas City to see the Broncos play on New Year’s Day. It’s probably a loss, but would be amazing to see Wilson beat Mahomes on his home turf. BTW: Denver … [Read more...] about Kickin’ It with Kiz: Which Broncos foe would be sweetest to beat: Drew Lock, Josh McDaniels or Patrick Mahomes?
