Elehuris Montero arrived at spring training with a lot to prove. The Rockies’ rookie has done that — and then some. Montero, 24, not only won the starting third-base job, but he also showed that he might be primed to be a high-impact player. Montero launched his team-leading fifth home run of the Cactus League on Sunday in Colorado’s 7-5 loss to Cincinnati. His latest wallop was a 428-foot, two-run blast in the fourth inning. Montero has slashed .328/.381/.621 in 21 Cactus League games with two doubles and a team-high 12 RBIs. On Saturday, he was presented with the Abby Greer Award as spring training’s MVP. Montero, part of the Nolan Arenado trade with the Cardinals prior to the 2021 season, arrived at camp with a two-fold missing: improve his footwork around third base and handle breaking pitches better. “The more he works, the better his footwork is getting,” new infield coach Warren Schaeffer said. “For me, it’s just a matter of him defending at the next level, because … [Read more...] about Rockies spring training report: Elehuris Montero makes big strides, named camp MVP

Mets Notes: Justin Verlander avoids injury in final spring tuneup
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The Mets will escape spring training with six healthy starting pitchers, which seems like an absolute wealth of arms compared to past years when the Mets were forced to open the season without some of their top pitchers. Only one marquee starter, left-hander Jose Quintana, will start the season on the injured list and one of those healthy arms will start the season in Triple-A. But for a brief moment on Sunday afternoon, it looked as though history would repeat itself when Justin Verlander was hit with not one, but two comebackers in the team’s final Grapefruit League game of the season. Verlander, the reigning Cy Young Award winner that signed a two-year, $87 million contract in December after Jacob deGrom bolted for the Texas Rangers, was hit above his ankle on one leg and on his calf on the other in the Mets’ 3-3 tie with the Miami Marlins at Clover Park. It was the third time this spring Verlander had been hit by a batted ball. However, the 40-year-old … [Read more...] about Mets Notes: Justin Verlander avoids injury in final spring tuneup

Tabuena just misses outright Open berth
Late bogey costs Miguel Tabuena (photo above) the fourth ticket to the British Open. —ASIAN TOUR PHOTO Taichi Kho overcame final-round nerves on Sunday to become the first Hong Kong player to win an Asian Tour event at rain-shortened World City Championship, where the Philippines’ Miguel Tabuena checked in tied for fourth and missed an outright British Open slot after a late bogey. Kho, who turned professional in January, closed out with a level par-70 to tally a 54-hole 198 and win the P1 million event by two shots over Australia’s Michael Hendry, who fired a 68. Tabuena, meanwhile, stumbled with a 72 for another hefty paycheck, but a tie for fourth spot with South Korea’s Bio Kim at 202 denied the Philippine ace of automatic qualification at Royal Liverpool in June by virtue of a lower world ranking compared to Kim. The tournament staked four outright slots to the Open, where Cam Smith of Australia will defend his crown. Tabuena started the resumption of the third round … [Read more...] about Tabuena just misses outright Open berth
