Sarah Rahal The Detroit News Published 11:36 AM EDT Jul 20, 2019 Maybe Saturday is a day to spend with friends who have power, head to the mall or watch the new "Lion King" in theaters. An excessive heat warning remains in effect for Southeast Michigan's 11 counties through 8 p.m. Saturday. During the afternoon, high temperatures will peak near 98, with a heat index of up to 111. There's also a threat of severe thunderstorms, which could bring some relief but lead to power outages. Southeast Michigan sits on the northern edge of an intense "heat dome," a high-pressure zone that traps heat. The conditions are the result of the dome hovering over the eastern two-thirds of the nation. More than 100 local heat records are expected to fall Saturday across the country, according to the National Weather Service. Most won’t be record-daily highs but record-high nighttime lows, when blistering temperatures during the day typically fall enough at night for a little … [Read more...] about SE Michigan under excessive heat warning as storms approach

Officers with the Grand Blanc Township Police Department responded Tuesday and learned that the 67-year-old man had been trying to remove the concrete slab when it collapsed. An officer and others quickly lifted the slab off the man and he was taken to a hospital, where police said he died. The man's name wasn't immediately released. Police Chief Ron Wiles described the man as a relative of the homeowner and said what happened awas a "tragic, freak accident." The home is located in Genesee County, near Flint, about 45 miles northwest of Detroit. The death is under investigation. A special team at the Horton General Hospital has been easing pressure on A&E by treating approximately 300 patients a month who would otherwise be in an emergency department bed. The Rowan Ambulatory Unit receives patient referrals from the emergency department, GPs, and other wards within the hospital.Staff at the unit then provide treatment and help patients receive community or home-based care, and the feedback from patients has been ‘really positive’.Ward manager Jayne Brown said: “We’re really pleased with how the unit is working. “No-one wants to be in hospital longer than they need to be, and we work hard to make sure people are back with their home comforts and loved ones as soon as it’s safe for them to be there. “We are also able to offer treatments in a day unit setting that means that patients do not have to be admitted to hospital, but can go back to their own homes on the same day.“This means that the pressure on our … [Read more...] about Patients ‘happier’ as special Horton unit helping to relieve pressure on A&E
