Everyone who has travelled on holiday by plane remembers one landing that left them on edge - but twenty-eight years ago today a ferocious touchdown in the middle of a sandstorm ended in deadly tragedy. A total of 80 people including four crew members and 76 of the 89 passengers on the Air Mauritanie Flight 625 were killed on July 1 1994 when a heavy landing resulted in a horrific plane crash at Tidjikja Airport in Mauritania, West Africa. The sandstorm saw the Fokker F28-4000 Fellowship aircraft smash into a rock and burst into flames after the pilot careered off the runway during a chaotic landing.
