In a bid to get homeless veterans off the streets, Los Angeles awarded more than $10 million to help transform an unfussy building in Westlake into supportive housing. Now critics are arguing that the money should be pulled. The reason? “One set of extremely poor residents were displaced to make way for another set of extremely poor residents,” attorneys from the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the Western Center on Law and Poverty wrote to the city on behalf of the Los Angeles Community Action Network. “This is, at best, a waste of taxpayer money.” The Royal Park Motel — now known as West Third Apartments — had recently been home to some residents who accused their landlord of illegally booting them out of their units. The new year appears to be more of a transition period, as progress continues on major developments downtown. There isn't a glitzy arena opening or a skyscraper near completion. Motorists traveling over the Detroit River will still have to look to the Ambassador Bridge as the Gordie Howe International Bridge begins to take shape. For change, head west to Lansing, where a Democratic governor, attorney general and secretary of state take power. All eyes will be on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and her work with the Republican-controlled Legislature. But many questions will likely be answered: Will Detroit finally show population gain? Holly Spalding, 22, said she had just pulled her attacker from the roof of her car when she locked herself in and he started “belting the hell” out of her windscreen and doors. Miss Spalding, of Hunworth in north Norfolk, escaped without injury but is furious after £1,000 worth of damage was caused to the car. Miss Spalding said she was driving through Holt at about 7.15pm on Boxing Day when she came across two men and a woman in the carriageway of Norwich Road.
