Trump Told Supporters to ‘Watch’ Voting. His Staff Is More Than Watching.
When President Trump used the prime-time debate last week to urge his supporters to “go into the polls and watch very carefully,” he wasn’t just issuing a call for a grass-roots movement or raising the prospect of intimidation tactics at voting sites. He was also nodding to an extensive behind-the-scenes effort led by the lawyers and operatives on his campaign. Over the summer, Mr. Trump named a new campaign manager, Bill Stepien, who was once a top aide to former Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey before being fired amid the “ Bridgegate ” scandal. Mr. Stepien swiftly elevated a group of lieutenants focused on using aggressive electoral tactics, moves that led Marc E. Elias, the leading election lawyer for the Democratic Party, to tweet that Mr. Trump was “tripling down” on “opposing voting rights.” One of the main architects of the effort is Justin Clark, whom Mr. Stepien promoted to deputy campaign manager. He has been viewed with suspicion among Democrats since he was … [Read more...] about Trump Told Supporters to ‘Watch’ Voting. His Staff Is More Than Watching.

America’s small businesses are running out of workers
(CNN) The pandemic forced Freed Bodyworks, a wellness center offering massage therapy, yoga, acupuncture, mental health counseling and other services, to shut down for four months. But while clients returned when it reopened in the summer of 2020, workers did not. Almost two years later, owners Frances Reed and Jessica VonDyke were forced to shut the business' doors. "I couldn't hire anyone," said Reed. "We never had trouble with our demand for services. It was 100% a supply issue for us." Freed Bodyworks Holistic Wellness Center in Washington, DC. It reopened with a skeleton crew of eight -- too few, Reed said, to bring in enough revenue to sustain the business. Russia’s version of Starbucks reopens with a new name and logo
Moscow A restaurateur and rapper duo unveiled Stars Coffee on Thursday, reopening the chain of coffee shops in Russia formerly owned by Starbucks, the latest major company rebranding after a months-long Western corporate exodus from the country. At a packed launch in central Moscow, rapper Timati presented the new brand, whose logo features an image of a woman with a star above her head, alongside co-owner and restaurateur Anton Pinskiy, before shops start opening on Friday. Banned from using the Starbucks ( SBUX ) logo, Timati said they had sought to find some continuity, namely the circular shape and "female gender," which he said contrasted nicely with the brown, cigar-like "masculine color" in the new logo. Russian singer and entrepreneur Timur Yunusov, better known as Timati, drinks coffee at a newly opened Stars Coffee coffee shop in the former location of the Starbucks coffee shop in Moscow, Russia, "People's perceptions may … [Read more...] about Russia’s version of Starbucks reopens with a new name and logo
Inside Eureka Springs, the Bible Belt’s LGBTQ oasis
By Scottie Andrew, CNN Updated 1609 GMT (0009 HKT) June 29, 2022 (CNN) Rodd Gray moved to Eureka Springs to rest . Gray had done it all, or close to it, in his 60-plus years -- the military veteran has been a hairdresser, computer programmer, award-winning AIDS advocate , and drag queen (he performed as Patti Le Plae Safe, a Miss Gay America winner). When a tornado blew through Dallas and destroyed his former workplace, followed shortly by the arrival of Covid-19, the Texan was ready to trade in the bustle for some quiet in the Arkansas town of 2,000. But when he arrived in January of last year, retirement didn't happen. Gray fell in fast with the locals, even reviving the Ms. Le Plae Safe act for charity gigs. Now he mans the front desk at a motel-turned-LGBTQ-friendly resort, the Wanderoo Lodge, owned by a gay couple who recently settled in Eureka themselves. The only problem with moving to Eureka Springs, Gray said, is that he didn't get there sooner. … [Read more...] about Inside Eureka Springs, the Bible Belt’s LGBTQ oasis
