A spooked schoolboy spent the night in his mother's room after a 'ghost girl' appeared to photobomb him during a visit to a playground. Ayesha Wilson-Bent, 36, was at home on July 26 when her son Gabriel Ashmore, 14, sent her a picture of his 12-year-old brother Kristian Ashmore beaming from inside a tower of tyres. As Kristian scrolled through photos that evening he spotted what he thought was a cobweb near his head in that image. But after the 12-year-old brightened the snap and zoomed in on the mystery shape his stomach dropped as he spotted what actually appeared to be the face of a young girl looming over his shoulder. Youth rep: With rampant red-tagging, Jose Rizal would have been enemy of state today
Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel (Photo from his Facebook account) MANILA, Philippines — Author and Filipino hero Jose Rizal would have been called an enemy of the state if he were alive today due to his books, a youth party-list representative said of the rampant red-tagging local authors face now. On Monday’s House session, Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel cited a phrase from Rizal — writings which he said would be banned just as officials of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF) demand the banning of particular literature as subversive. “Let me begin by saying, ‘the idols will be shattered, tyranny will crumble like a house of cards, and liberty will shine out like the first dawn.’ These phrases are not mine, nor are they from a guidebook for subversives or rebels,” Manuel said. “These are words from national hero Jose Rizal. But if he were alive today, for sure he would be branded as an enemy of the state and his writings would be banned. In connection to this, we slam the renewed … [Read more...] about Youth rep: With rampant red-tagging, Jose Rizal would have been enemy of state today

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with members of the Philippine Chamber of Food Manufacturers Inc. on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, to discuss their concerns about the sugary supply in the country. (Photo from Marcos’s Facebook account) MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. met with members of the Philippine Chamber of Food Manufacturers Inc. in Malacañang on Monday to tackle concerns over the sugar supply in the country. “We want the smooth operations of businesses and maintain job security for our countrymen in the fast-moving consumer goods industry. That’s why we want to set a clear system in relation to increasing the supply of sugar,” Marcos said in Filipino in a Facebook post. On Sunday, Marcos said the Philippines might import sugar around October should the supply be depleted. He stressed, however, that the amount would be smaller than the proposed 300,000 metric tons of sugar that he had earlier rejected. Specifically, he rejected Sugar Order … [Read more...] about Bongbong Marcos discusses sugar supply with food manufacturers
Kalayaan College shuts down after 22 years due to pandemic
Jose Abueva, the 16th president of the University of the Philippines who died in 2021, was one of the founders of Kalayaan College. (Photo from his Facebook account) MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-two years after its establishment, Kalayaan College (KC), a nonsectarian private institution founded by professors from the University of the Philippines (UP), announced on Tuesday that it would cease its operations, citing the financial challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an advisory, KC president Ma. Oliva Domingo said they were “faced with no other options” but to shut down because of the plunge in enrollment that caused “continuing” financial losses to the institution. Domingo said the closure would become final after ratification by the majority of stockholders, as the administration works on the requirements of the Commission on Higher Education . For the transition period, KC will offer limited general education courses and major courses that would allow … [Read more...] about Kalayaan College shuts down after 22 years due to pandemic
So-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law confuses some Florida schools
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Some Florida schools have moved library books and debated changing textbooks in response to a law critics call “Don’t Say Gay” — and some teachers have worried that family pictures on their desks could get them in trouble. As students return from summer break, educators are cautiously adjusting and waiting to see how the new law governing lessons on gender and sexual orientation will be interpreted and enforced. The new law, championed by Florida’s GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade as well as material that is not deemed age-appropriate. Most educators do not expect a major change in lesson plans — one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway. But some worry it sets a … [Read more...] about So-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law confuses some Florida schools
Just and ‘humane’ pay for state media sought
Press Secretary Trixie Angeles-Cruz (Photo from a video posted on Facebook) MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Press Secretary is seeking more funding for the state-run media to give their workers a just and “humane” salary. During Monday’s Senate committee hearing on public information and mass media, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles admitted that the pay of those working in the government media is “very, very much below the industry standard.” She mentioned workers’ salaries at the People’s Television Network or PTV 4. “Ang budget ng PTV nanggagaling sa GAA (General Appropriation Act) bukod po sa nabebenta natin sa advertising,” she explained. (The budget of PTV comes from the GAA aside from our sales from advertising.) “In other words, I will turn this into a plea na sana po ay madagdagan ng budget ang ating mga estasyon lalong lalo na po ang PTV4.” (In other words—I will turn this into a plea—I hope there will be an additional budget … [Read more...] about Just and ‘humane’ pay for state media sought
Dwayne Johnson Called the Studio to Remove Black Adam From ‘Shazam!’: It’d Be a ‘Disservice’ to the Character
Click here to read the full article. Dwayne Johnson ’s DC passion project “ Black Adam ” will finally open in theaters this October, but the character could’ve debuted in 2019’s “ Shazam !” had Warner Bros. went ahead with its original plan. The “Shazam!” movie went into development in 2014 with a script that included origin stories for both the title character and Black Adam. The duo have a shared history in the comics, so it seemed fitting to launch their big screen iterations together in one film. Johnson disagreed. “When the first draft of the movie came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: Two origin stories in one movie,” Johnson recently told Vanity Fair . “Now that was the goal — so it wasn’t a complete surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.’ It would’ve been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for … [Read more...] about Dwayne Johnson Called the Studio to Remove Black Adam From ‘Shazam!’: It’d Be a ‘Disservice’ to the Character

(Photo by Angela Weiss / AFP) London, United Kingdom — The UK’s drug regulator said Monday it had approved an updated Moderna vaccine against Covid-19 that targets the Omicron variant as well as the original form of the virus. The Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in a statement said it had approved the vaccine for adult booster doses “after it was found to meet the UK regulator’s standards of safety, quality and effectiveness.” It was the first such “bivalent” Covid-19 vaccine to be approved by the British regulator. The MHRA’s chief executive June Raine said data from a clinical trial had shown it prompted a “strong immune response” against the original virus and Omicron and would provide a “sharpened tool in our armory” as the virus kept … [Read more...] about UK clears new Moderna vaccine targeting Omicron variant
