By Kim Robertson on Nov 17, 2018 in Cruises & Boat Travel, Eastern Europe, Europe, Regions, Speciality Travel, Western Europe River cruising is gaining in popularity, but is it for you, and which river do you choose? The average age is slightly higher than ocean cruising, and it is generally more expensive, but it offers more inclusions and there is a suitable itinerary for everyone. There is a huge choice of companies now offering river cruises in Europe, and other parts of the world, including Asia, with a range of quality and itineraries available, from basic, right up to ultra- luxury. Many companies offer different themed cruises, golf, wine, food, castles and wellness being among some of the themes available. But which … [Read more...] about Top 9 rivers for luxury river cruising in Europe

My husband has been talking about his dream vacation — a riverboat cruise down the Rhine River — for years. Imagine his surprise when I told him I was going on the romantic Rhine without him! As my mom would say, “No boys allowed.” After my father passed away, my mother suggested to my sisters and me that we start taking a “girls’ vacation.” She is 84 years old and loves history, so the trips she is interested in come with cobblestones and steep stairs (we manage all this with a travel wheelchair). The magnificent man-made delights of the Danube prove there's more to river-cruise excursions shore-side than scenic terrain and natural wonders. Here’s our pick of the river's eight most impressive architectural sights: Budapest 1. Parliament Building Inspired by Britain’s Houses of Parliament, this elegant structure is the world’s third largest parliament building, and could be the highlight of a Danube cruise if your ship sets sail after dark as, like the city’s other landmarks, it will be illuminated. Its design was the winning entry in a competition held in the 1880s. Enormous colonnades, stained glass windows and elaborate chandeliers ensure an equal amount of interior pomp. 2. The Fisherman’s Bastion Another highlight in Hungary’s capital is the Fisherman’s Bastion. This stone structure, with its fairytale towers, was built between 1895 and 1902. It stands high above the river on the bank opposite the Parliament Building … [Read more...] about Eight architectural wonders worth seeing on a Danube river cruise
