Norway PM says oil profits to fund more aid to Ukraine
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway said Thursday that the oil-rich Scandinavian country will become one of the world’s top donors to Ukraine when his two-party center-left government presents another planned military and civilian aid package. Norway’s profits from oil will finance the additional aid, and there will be a temporary increase in the use of oil money, Gahr Støre told the Norwegian parliament. He did not reveal how large the contribution will be, but he said the government would make it soon. “We are in a situation where we have room for action due to extraordinary income from the petroleum sector,” said the prime minister, who leads Norway’s Labor Party. He said the aid would be arranged in a way that has very little impact on the level of activity in the Norwegian economy. Norway is one of Europe’s largest fossil-fuel exporters, and the conflict in Ukraine has boosted its gas revenues. However, Norway has fended off accusations … [Read more...] about Norway PM says oil profits to fund more aid to Ukraine
U.S. says Sime Darby Plantation products no longer produced with forced labor
KUALA LUMPUR – U.S. customs authorities have determined that palm oil products made by Malaysian firm Sime Darby Plantation were no longer produced with forced labor, according to a notice on the U.S. Federal Register on Thursday. Goods made by Sime Darby Plantation have been blocked from entering the United States since 2020 over suspected abusive labour practices. Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said it had sufficient information that the firm used “forced labor” and the goods were subject to seizure. In response, Sime Darby Plantation appointed an ethical trade consultancy to audit its facilities, and last year set aside about $20 million to compensate current and former migrant workers who paid recruitment fees to secure jobs at the firm. CBP, citing additional information it had received, said on Thursday it had now “determined that the products were no longer being mined, produced, or manufactured wholly or in part with the use of convict, forced, or … [Read more...] about U.S. says Sime Darby Plantation products no longer produced with forced labor

Shell profit doubles to record as war drives up energy costs
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 LONDON (AP) — Global energy giant Shell said Thursday that its annual profits doubled to a record high last year as oil and natural gas prices soared after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. London-based Shell Plc posted adjusted earnings of $39.9 billion for 2022 in its financial results for the final three months of the year. Adjusted earnings in the fourth quarter, which exclude one-time items and fluctuations in the value of inventories, rose by 50%, to $9.8 billion, from the same period a year earlier.
