‘We’ve turned a corner’: California approves bullet train link from Central Valley to San Francisco
Plans for a bullet train line that could zoom passengers from the Central Valley into downtown San Francisco took a major leap forward this week when rail officials signed off on the 43-mile extension. California’s High-Speed Rail Authority board voted unanimously Thursday to sign off on a preferred route and environmental clearance for the segment that would carry fast trains from San Jose into the city by sharing electrified track with Caltrain’s commuter trains. The line could open for service by as soon as 2033, the authority projects. Stations are slated for San Francisco International Airport/Millbrae and the Caltrain Mission Bay station at Fourth and King streets, which would eventually be replaced by a station in the basement of Salesforce Transit Center. Major hurdles to the project remain. For starters, California hasn’t figured out where it will get up to $25 billion needed to build the San Francisco and Silicon Valley bullet-train extensions. Nevertheless, … [Read more...] about ‘We’ve turned a corner’: California approves bullet train link from Central Valley to San Francisco
Browns won’t trade for 49ers’ Garoppolo in wake of Deshaun Watson suspension: report
One of the last remaining trade destinations for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo appears to have been shut. The Cleveland Browns, who had been rumored to be interested in Garoppolo, will not acquire the veteran Niners player — at least in a trade, according to a report from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports . "They believe in Jacoby Brissett," Jones reported on the Browns. "... They're not going to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. They are not going to trade for his salary cap number, which is around $24 million. Everyone in the NFL is waiting on the San Francisco 49ers to ultimately cut Jimmy Garoppolo, and then there can be a sort of feeding frenzy on Garoppolo." This news comes in the wake of the NFL and its players union agreeing to an 11-game suspension and $5 million fine for Deshaun Watson. Dozens of women have said that Watson sexually abused and harassed them during massage appointments. When the news of Watson’s initial six-game suspension was … [Read more...] about Browns won’t trade for 49ers’ Garoppolo in wake of Deshaun Watson suspension: report
Why the 49ers won’t be imminently cutting Jimmy Garoppolo after all
LATEST March 16, 11 a.m. As it turns out, there was a third option all along for the 49ers, and that's to remind everyone that teams view the cap deadline as more of an ephemeral threat than a looming financial threat. The 49ers are restructuring the contracts of George Kittle and Arik Armstead so that their respective cap hits help the team sit below the threshold before Wednesday's 1 p.m. PT deadline. That issue is now behind San Francisco, meaning the Niners no longer need to immediately cut Jimmy Garoppolo. But the fact that Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is still on the market does leave the 49ers lacking suitors who may have once been pounding at the door for Jimmy G. If anything, teams might recognize that the Niners are still in a financially troublesome position, since keeping Garoppolo is $25 million more expensive than cutting him entirely; instead of trying to trade for a mediocre-to-above average quarterback, teams could just play the waiting game, in theory. … [Read more...] about Why the 49ers won’t be imminently cutting Jimmy Garoppolo after all

You can listen to an audio version of the newsletter by clicking the same link. New York (CNN Business) The bears and bulls are at it again. Markets have seemingly recovered from a miserable downturn in mid-June that sent the S&P 500 ( SPX ) down more than 20%, but analysts and investors can't tell whether it's clear skies ahead or if they're in the eye of the storm. Things are looking pretty good right about now. The 9.2% return in the S&P 500 last month marked its best July since the Great Depression. Jurrien Timmer of Fidelity Investments noted recently that 88% of all stocks in the index are currently sitting pretty above their 50-day moving average. "If this rally continues much further than it has so far, on a historical basis it will be hard to conclude that this is not a new bull market," he … [Read more...] about Has the bear market really gone into early hibernation?
Ukrainian nuclear plant facing ‘grave hour,’ UN watchdog says
United Nations (CNN) The "alarming" situation at a Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine had reached a "grave hour," the head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog said Thursday, as he called for an immediate inspection of the facility by international experts. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi warned that parts of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant had been knocked out due to recent attacks , risking an "unacceptable" potential radiation leak. "IAEA experts believe that there is no immediate threat to nuclear safety," but "that could change at any moment," Grossi said. "Any military action jeopardizing nuclear safety, nuclear security, must stop immediately," he added. "These military actions near to such a large nuclear facility could lead to very serious consequences." The Zaporizhzhia facility -- the largest nuclear plant in Europe -- occupies an extensive site on the … [Read more...] about Ukrainian nuclear plant facing ‘grave hour,’ UN watchdog says
Inside Eureka Springs, the Bible Belt’s LGBTQ oasis
By Scottie Andrew, CNN Updated 1609 GMT (0009 HKT) June 29, 2022 (CNN) Rodd Gray moved to Eureka Springs to rest . Gray had done it all, or close to it, in his 60-plus years -- the military veteran has been a hairdresser, computer programmer, award-winning AIDS advocate , and drag queen (he performed as Patti Le Plae Safe, a Miss Gay America winner). When a tornado blew through Dallas and destroyed his former workplace, followed shortly by the arrival of Covid-19, the Texan was ready to trade in the bustle for some quiet in the Arkansas town of 2,000. But when he arrived in January of last year, retirement didn't happen. Gray fell in fast with the locals, even reviving the Ms. Le Plae Safe act for charity gigs. Now he mans the front desk at a motel-turned-LGBTQ-friendly resort, the Wanderoo Lodge, owned by a gay couple who recently settled in Eureka themselves. The only problem with moving to Eureka Springs, Gray said, is that he didn't get there sooner. … [Read more...] about Inside Eureka Springs, the Bible Belt’s LGBTQ oasis
