The race to succeed Scott Sherman on the San Diego City Council has gotten more crowded in the wake of sexual assault and sexual harassment accusations against school trustee Kevin Beiser, who was considered one of the leading candidates.Three new candidates have entered the race, bringing the total to nine – seven Democrats and two Republicans. Sherman, a Republican, can’t run for re-election in 2020 because of term limits.Winning the seat could increase the Democrats’ council majority beyond the current 6-2, giving them more power to set the city’s agenda. The council’s ninth member, Mark Kersey, shifted his party affiliation from Republican to independent this week. District 7, which includes Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, Tierrasanta, Mission Valley and Linda Vista, had 33,800 registered Democrats and 23,800 registered Republicans through April 2.
