Marc Benioff is the rare tech mogul who appreciates hometown pride and physical space. The CEO and co-founder of Salesforce has donated $110 million to public schools in San Francisco and Oakland through the giant firm’s foundation. He led a successful 2018 ballot drive to combat homelessness by taxing corporations like his homegrown tech behemoth. Now I’d like to see Benioff explore ways to make San Francisco’s sagging Financial District into a robust mixed-use neighborhood — starting with Salesforce West, the 43-story office tower that Salesforce owns at 50 Fremont St., a half-empty monolith from early 1985 that could become a test lab for turning old towers into new strongholds of urban life. This may sound presumptuous, but Benioff hasn’t been shy in airing his concerns about the commercial heart of the city where he was born, and where his company occupies three towers at Fremont and Mission streets. “We’ve a very homogeneous downtown. You have to rebalance,” Benioff … [Read more...] about This half-empty office tower could help transform downtown San Francisco

Half Moon Bay suspect admits to shooting rampage, says he was bullied
The agricultural worker suspected of killing seven people in a shooting rampage at two farms around Half Moon Bay, Calif., this week admitted that he committed the attacks in a jailhouse interview with local media on Thursday, saying he regretted going through with the act. The suspect, 66-year-old Zhao Chunli, spoke with journalist Janelle Wang of KNTV in his first media interview since the shootings that rocked the small coastal community south of San Francisco. Zhao, who is charged with seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, spoke to Wang for about 15 minutes in Mandarin in an interview at the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City, Calif. No cameras were allowed inside the jail. Zhao was asked by Wang whether he had any regrets for the killings. He answered with one word: "Yes." He believes he suffers from mental illness and that he's been "struggling with it for a while," Wang said. "He says he sees things unclearly and wants to be evaluated by a … [Read more...] about Half Moon Bay suspect admits to shooting rampage, says he was bullied

MOVIES — If you haven’t managed to catch “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” yet, the Marvel sequel arrives on Disney+ on Wednesday with a batch of five Oscar nominations to its name, including best supporting actress for Angela Bassett and original song (“Lift Me Up,” music by Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Göransson; lyrics by Tems and Ryan Coogler). In his review, AP Film Writer Jake Coyle wrote that, “‘Wakanda Forever’ is overlong, a little unwieldy and somewhat mystifyingly steers toward a climax on a barge in the middle of the Atlantic. But Coogler’s fluid command of mixing intimacy with spectacle remains gripping.” — Pamela Anderson has been making headlines again for revelations in the documentary … [Read more...] about New this week: Shania, ‘Princess Power’ and Pamela Anderson
Who will be Hurricanes’ new offensive coordinator? Seven candidates to consider, including ex-Dolphins WR Brian Hartline
With Josh Gattis’ long-expected departure from the Hurricanes now official, Mario Cristobal and Miami are searching for a new offensive coordinator. Last year, Miami made a big splash by hiring Gattis, who was coming off a Broyles Award-winning season at Michigan. Unfortunately for UM fans, it did not work out as planned. The Hurricanes ended the season 97th in offense. Gattis, who also filled the role of wide receivers coach, is the second Hurricanes offensive assistant to leave this offseason, joining former quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce, who is the new offensive coordinator at Appalachian State. The Hurricanes will need to find a coordinator who can double up at one of those positions and find a new position coach for the other. But first, UM needs to find its new offensive coordinator. Here is a short list of possible candidates: Marcus Arroyo Arroyo, who was UNLV’s head coach until he was fired at the end of the 2022 season, has experience working with … [Read more...] about Who will be Hurricanes’ new offensive coordinator? Oscar contenders court box-office bounce as drama audiences dwindle
Director Steven Spielberg and cast member Michelle Williams attend a premiere for the film “The Fabelmans” during the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, California, USA, Nov. 6, 2022. Image: Reuters/Mario Anzuoni LOS ANGELES—More movie theaters this weekend will be showing “The Fablemans,” “Tar” and “Women Talking,” a move to capitalize on the films’ Oscar nominations at a time when dramas are struggling to draw people to cinemas. After moviegoing plunged during the pandemic, audiences have returned in droves to action-packed blockbusters such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The “Avatar” sequel has raked in more than $2 billion, ranking as the sixth-highest grossing film of all time. Many of the Hollywood dramas targeted at adult viewers have not fared nearly as well. Some older moviegoers simply have not returned to the local megaplex, industry executives told Reuters. Others have decided to wait to stream movies that do not have a visual spectacle that pops off … [Read more...] about Oscar contenders court box-office bounce as drama audiences dwindle
4 outrages we aren’t allowed to talk about
close Video San Francisco cracks down on crime, yet these struggles remain, activist says After a district attorney recall thrusted Brooke Jenkins into power this summer, the new DA has been tougher on crime, a San Francisco activist told Fox News. NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! As a white child, I not only grew up in abject poverty and found myself homeless often, but also living in majority black projects from time to time as my family was evicted from 34 homes by the time I was 17 years of age. With some of those moves, I was either the only white child in my class or one of the few. During those years, single black moms working two or three jobs to support their children while sacrificing their own happiness not only became my heroes, but enduring role models. Black lives do matter; should matter; and need to be protected. And yet, many on the left will not allow us to discuss a generational outrage which has claimed … [Read more...] about 4 outrages we aren’t allowed to talk about
