close Video Why prosecutors charged Alec Baldwin Did they overreach in the movie-shooting tragedy? Convicting Alec Baldwin on involuntary manslaughter charges could prove to be an "uphill battle," according to legal experts. The actor is facing two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Halyna Hutchins. The cinematographer died Oct. 21, 2021, after a gun Baldwin was holding fired on the set of the Western film "Rust." Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and assistant director Dave Halls were the only other crew members believed to have handled the gun that fired on set. Halls allegedly handed Baldwin a .45 revolver, telling him that it was "cold," or safe. Prior to that, Gutierrez-Reed spun the cylinder to show Halls what was in the gun, her lawyer has said. Despite the charges carrying up to 18 months in prison or a mandatory five years if convicted with a firearm enhancement, Baldwin might not see prison. Groups advocating for professional social workers and abortion rights said they have succeeded in forcing a small Ohio city to significantly narrow its ban on conducting or recommending abortions and so have ended their legal challenge. The lawsuit by the National Association of Social Workers and the Abortion Fund of Ohio argued that the law, passed in May 2021, represented an "extraordinarily broad" infringement on the constitutional rights of due process and free speech. The groups' lawyers at the ACLU of Ohio and Democracy Forward further alleged the ban violated Ohio’s home-rule provisions. Election-denying lawmakers hold key election oversight roles
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 7 HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republican lawmakers who have spread election conspiracy theories and falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential outcome was rigged are overseeing legislative committees charged with setting election policy in two major political battleground states. Divided government in Pennsylvania and Arizona means that any voting restrictions those GOP legislators propose is likely to fail. Even so, the high-profile appointments give the lawmakers a platform to cast further doubt on the integrity of elections in states that will be pivotal in selecting the next president in 2024. Awarding such plum positions to lawmakers who have repeated conspiracies and spread misinformation cuts against more than two years of evidence showing there were no widespread problems or fraud in the last presidential election. It also would appear to run counter to the … [Read more...] about Election-denying lawmakers hold key election oversight roles
