Actor Leonardo DiCaprio. AP FILE PHOTO JAKARTA, Indonesia — An Indonesian immigration official says Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio may banned from returning to Indonesia over his criticisms that palm oil plantations are destroying the country’s rainforests. The Oscar-winning actor made a one-day visit to protected Mount Leuser National Park in Tamiang, an Aceh district neighboring North Sumatra province, last weekend and uploaded photos to his Instagram account, expressing concerns over species whose habitats are threatened. Heru Santoso, the spokesman for the Directorate General for Immigration at the Law and Human Rights Ministry, says Saturday that DiCaprio used his visit to discredit the palm oil industry and the Indonesian government. Santoso says, “We can blacklist him from returning to Indonesia at any time, if he keeps posting incitement or provocative statements in his social media.” Your subscription could not be saved. NY judge jails ex-gynecologist who abused 100s of women
NEW YORK (AP) — An ex-gynecologist convicted of sexually abusing hundreds of patients was ordered to spend the next two months in jail as he awaits sentencing, a federal judge in New York City ruled Wednesday. After hearing statements from some of the victims during the bail hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Berman tersely shot down defense attorneys seeking to allow the doctor, Robert Hadden, to remain free while awaiting an April sentencing hearing. “I’m done, and you’re done,” Berman was quoted by the New York Daily News as saying. Afterward, Hadden’s attorneys filed papers appealing the judge’s detention order. Hadden had worked at two prestigious Manhattan hospitals — Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital — until complaints about his attacks shut down his career a decade ago. Hadden, 64, of Englewood, New Jersey, was convicted last week after less than a day of deliberations at a two-week trial, in which nine former patients … [Read more...] about NY judge jails ex-gynecologist who abused 100s of women
Vietnam considering taxing land and buildings separately
In Vietnam there is no tax on buildings although urbanization has created a considerable added value to land, while some countries tax both land and buildings, the government said in a draft bill that is set to be presented to the National Assembly in October next year. The government therefore proposed an accumulative tax on buildings, in which the bigger the value of a property the higher the tax. While it also suggested that the current land tax be increased, the government did not say by how much. In some countries such as Denmark, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and in some U.S. states, the taxable value of a building is its cost of construction. For apartments, the government proposed that the taxable value will be the price of the apartment. Taxes could be higher for premium apartments that are priced over VND50 million ($2,132) per square meter. Social and worker housing, and temporary buildings will be exempt from the tax so that low-income people will not be … [Read more...] about Vietnam considering taxing land and buildings separately
Man Utd flops: What happened to Bebe, Obertan and 8 other transfer disasters
Manchester United have one of the largest scouting networks in the world that has helped them get the jump on their rivals. To date, their signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for a paltry £12.24 million remains one of the greatest of all-time and probably won't be bettered. Many United fans will be hoping for a similar success story from Ivorian starlet Amad Diallo, the 18-year-old who signed from Atalanta for £37m in January, while Facundo Pellistri is another talent recently signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils have had many success stories owing to their scouting knowledge in Latin America; the signing of a virtually unknown Javier Hernandez in 2010 is testament to that. But even the best managers in the world such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal are partial to making blunders when it comes to transfers. Here are 10 flops who turned out for Manchester United and what happened to them since… 1. Radamel Falcao … [Read more...] about Man Utd flops: What happened to Bebe, Obertan and 8 other transfer disasters

Factory Activity In Asia Falls In Spite Of China’s COVID Re-opening
(CTN NEWS) – TOKYO – According to polls released on Wednesday, Asia’s manufacturing activity decreased in January as the COVID reopening in China failed to fully offset the region’s economic recovery’s headwinds from the declining economies of the United States and Europe. A private sector study revealed that after Beijing removed strict COVID controls late last year, industrial activity in China declined more gradually in January. Initial signals of hope for Asia can also be found in easing input price pressures, with surveys revealing that the rate of output decline is moderating in Japan and South Korea. However, other economists say there is doubt about Asia’s ability to withstand the blow of weakening global demand and persistently rising inflation. / REUTERS According to Toru Nishihama, chief economist at the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute in Tokyo, “the worst of Asia’s downturn is behind.
