As Lankford’s opens second location, here’s a look back at its history
One of the oldest restaurants in Houston is opening a second location in Bellaire at the beginning of February. Lankford's Grocery & Market will bring its thick, juicy burgers, hand-cut fries and breakfast plates to 5208 Bissonnet Street. Lankford's has been a staple in the Houston restaurant world since it began serving burgers in the small diner-style spot on the border of Montrose and Midtown decades ago. It gained the attention of foodies nationwide when Guy Fieri brought Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives to Houston to sample the spicy Firehouse burger in 2009. Paul Prior, the grandson of Lankford's original owners, says that the Firehouse burger with cayenne butter, habanero sauce and jalapeños remains a favorite years after Fieri's visit, but the Grim burger is another top dish. Lankford's began as a grocery store before becoming the landmark restaurant it is today. For Paul, his go-to order is easy.
